The evolution of WorldTempus 2001-2016

1 minute read
As part of a year of celebrations of 15 years of WorldTempus, I decided to take a look into our archives to see how the watch industry, its products and the web itself have evolved since 2001.

The title may be a boast, but it’s something we regularly hear from our readers and many of the watch brands who have placed their trust in us over the past 15 years. And what better way to demonstrate this than to take a look back in the archives to see just what we have been writing about over these 15 years on the Internet?

To do so, I did a simple Google search across worldtempus.com singling out the individual years using the advanced search function. I learned a few things along the way and got a snapshot of how the industry and its products have evolved over this period. I have chosen one article per year that I believe is significant to the industry in some particular way, starting with the Patek Philippe Skymoon Tourbillon, which was launched, like WorldTempus, back in 2001. Naturally, this is a subjective process and you may find that something else was more important in that particular year. If so, feel free to let me know in the comments.

WorldTempus started out in life at one of the worst points in the Internet’s short history, right in the middle of the “dot-com” crash, back in the days of Internet Explorer 6 and the launch of the first Apple iPod. How far we have come since, following the IPO of search giant Google, the launch of Facebook (both in 2004), Youtube (2005) and Twitter (2006). The Internet has also gone mobile (a quarter of our visitors now read WorldTempus on a mobile device) and streaming video services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime have increased Internet traffic considerably. At this year’s Mobile World Congress we even got a foretaste of the next big thing: 5G wireless with a promise of almost infinite bandwidth. Like the technology industry, WorldTempus has evolved considerably over the past 15 years, particularly in terms of its design, as the video above shows.

Look out for the full series of 15 articles referring to our archives throughout the course of this year, each with a short editorial to put the article in its horological and general context. We hope you enjoy this look back into the past.
