Bulgari and the City of Rome announced the start of the renovation of the Spanish Steps.

Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of the Bulgari Group, and Ignazio Marino, the Mayor of Rome, announced last 7 October the start of the work on the conservation and renovation of the Spanish Steps. The project is the result of an agreement with the City of Rome signed in March 2014 that promised a donation of 1.5 million Euros from the Group. The aim is to return one of the capital's most famous monuments - which is also an iconic location for Bulgari - to its former splendor. Indeed it was close to the Steps, in Via Sistina, that the founder of the brand, Sotirio Bulgari, first established himself with his family at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1884 he opened his first shop there, with the latter addition of two additional boutiques in Via Condotti. Later, in 1923, the boutique at n° 10 Via Condotti became the only Bulgari store in Rome; for decades the Steps continued to link it with the Bulgari family home.

Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of the Bulgari Group, commented: “We are delighted to announce the start of the work on the renovation of the Spanish Steps, the project Bulgari has chosen to pay tribute to its city to mark its 130th Anniversary, celebrated in 2014. Rome's rich archaeological, artistic and architectural heritage has always been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for our collections; the extraordinary patronage for a monument which represents the heart of our story is yet another expression of the indissoluble bond between Bulgari and the Eternal City.”

“At the end of this important project directed by the Sovrintendenza”, said Ignazio Marino, the Mayor of Rome, “we will return to the city a place which symbolises Rome in Italy and throughout the world. We owe this gift to the generosity of the Bulgari Group which has reached us in a particularly important year for the capital: the year of the Jubilee of Mercy. During the Holy Year millions of pilgrims will have the opportunity to admire the treasures of Rome, and to appreciate this Administration's work to enhance the city's cultural heritage in partnership with leading businesses such as Bulgari”.

They immediately became a favorite destination for Romans and tourists enjoying leisurely walks in the center. From the fifties onwards, when the Eternal City became an open-air cinema set, the Steps have been the setting of unforgettable scenes of seminal films which have
