And why not? Serge is back! - Editorial

Discover the world of watches through the eyes of a collection.

Those who read WorldTempus in English might be less familiar with Serge Panczuk than our French-speaking readers. Serge first started writing for us back in 2012 and his articles in French, presenting watches from a collector’s point of view, have always been well-liked by our readers. As a frequent long-haul traveller, Serge often has periods of 15 hours on a plane when he is disconnected from the world, giving him plenty of time to delve deep into the story behind a watch.

Before I arrived at WorldTempus in 2014, Serge’s in-depth articles were not translated into English due to time and budget constraints. Those constraints still exist, but since one of my goals as a native English speaker is to broaden the appeal of WorldTempus to English-speaking watch fans, I felt duty bound to make Serge’s excellent articles available in English. By coincidence, I am also a qualified and experienced translator, so all I needed to do was take a leaf out of Serge’s book and use some of my own travel time to translate his articles. My three-hour daily commute also helps…

You will quickly grasp Serge’s unique style and hopefully, like me, you will appreciate the thought and research that goes into each article. They are all based on the simple premise of choosing a particular watch (“Why not...?”), setting out a general context for the timepiece in question, presenting it in detail, allowing the devil’s advocate to speak and finally – as the icing on the cake – even suggesting the outfits to go with the watch. I hope they are as pleasurable for you to read as they have been for me to translate.

I am delighted to announce Serge’s return to our pages, starting with articles on Panerai and Seiko. Since he travels frequently, he has been very productive of late and you can look forward to articles on a number of watches over the coming weeks. Keep your eyes out in particular for an article in November that will help you understand the three-year hiatus in his articles.
