The Open Championship - The top players and their watches head for Troon - Watches and golf

Less than a week after presiding over the hallowed turf of Wimbledon, the Rolex Oyster clock will be keeping time at another venerable British sporting institution at the 145th Open Championship this week. Here are some of the watch-mad golfers to watch out for.

Rolex and Omega may well be locked in a constant battle for naming rights, but it’s Audemars Piguet that dominates the players’ wrists, with no less than 10 of professional golfers among its friends of the brand. You can see them all in the unusual context of Audemars Piguet’s “Midnight Masters” video. The brand thus has a fair chance of one of its team making the cut.

One of the players guaranteed to be wearing his watch on the Troon course when he tees off with Rory McIlroy in the first round will be Bubba Watson, who usually sports his white RM 055. Whether you think playing golf with a watch is sacrilege or simply akin to wearing one while clapping your hands, it is a pre-requisite for any Richard Mille ambassador to wear his or her timepiece while doing their sport, whether it’s driving a racing car, playing tennis or spoiling a good walk (to paraphrase Mark Twain).

After the nail-biting conclusion of the European football championships last weekend, Hublot will for once be able to take a break from the beautiful game it loves to cheer on its golfer Justin Rose. The 35 year-old will be playing his 15th Open Championship and will be hoping to improve on his career-best Open finish in fourth place, which he achieved at the tender age of 17 while still an amateur. The Brit’s watch of choice is the Hublot Big Bang Unico.
