Many watchmakers started their holidays this week. Although the Worldtempus team is staying put to keep you up-to-date with watchmaking news, we did allow for some holiday themed articles on the site last week.

Ralph Lauren has always been fascinated by safaris. So much so that he has created an entire watch collection around the safari theme. Olivier Müller presented the latest models in this collection. He also interviewed one of the rare female CEOs in the industry, talking to Barbara Monti of Eberhard & Co.

Judging by the social media groups dedicated to diver’s watches, I’m not the only non-diver with a passion for diver’s watches. I’m not even a particularly proficient swimmer, but I love the robustness and resistance of a diver’s watch. Last week, I presented a first selection of this season’s diver’s watches as part of our Summer Watches feature. Look out for some even more resistant timepieces in the second instalment this week.

The Swatch Group’s results for the first six months of 2014, published last week, made for quite sobering reading, particularly when compared to the impressive figures for Hermès that I spotted in a research report by Switzerland’s Vontobel private bank. Luc Perramond, CEO of La Montre Hermès, explained the reasons for this to Worldtempus on the day before the company closed for its annual holidays.

On a more positive note, the Swatch Group is back with a vengeance at this year’s Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix, with Blancpain, Breguet, Harry Winston, Jaquet Droz, Omega and Tissot all submitting watches. Read our editorial for more information and check out David Chokron’s selection of watches submitted in the tourbillon category – the first of our weekly analyses of all twelve categories in the competition.
