80 years of flyback chronos, 72 preselected watches for the GPHG and one Eterna ladies’ watch to win

It’s been a while since we have offered a ladies’ watch in our monthly competition, so I am delighted to announce that you can win an Eterna For Her ladies’ watch with diamonds worth 2,790 Swiss francs in our September competition. There will be more ladies’ watch news on Thursday, with a major luxury brand set announce some exciting new models right here on WorldTempus.

« Ce mois-ci, gagnez une montre Eterna pour dames »

After we analysed the entrants in all 12 of the categories for this year’s Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, we presented the finalists as announced by the jury last week. There is the customary raising of eyebrows at certain models that did or did not make the grade (already expressed in my editorial) so our next step will be to quiz some members of the jury on how they make their decisions. With the field now cut down to just 72 timepieces, we will also take a closer look at some of the finalists, especially those whose debut has been timed specifically to coincide with the GPHG.

You can see all 72 finalists at a glance on our dedicated page, where you have two voting possibilities: one takes you to the official site gphg.org, where you can take part in the draw for the Public Prize and win a one-week MSC Yacht Club Mediterranean cruise for two courtesy of MSC Cruises. The other is for our informal poll for the favourite watches in each category – choose your favourite watch and you will instantly see whether your choice is in line with the majority of our readers.

One type of watch that you will not find among the finalists of the GPHG is the flyback chronograph. The only example submitted for consideration, the Manero Flyback from Carl F. Bucherer, did not make the cut. Yet as Olivier Müller explains today, this complication, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, is as relevant as ever, even spreading to areas far beyond the scope of its original function.
