For nearly half a century, Mouawad Genève has been producing fine timepieces. In fact, in the late 1990s Robert Mouawad acquired a watch case production facility in Les Breleux, where it continues to manufacture. The brand produces several collections and recently fourth-generation Alain Mouawad has taken on the role of heading the Division of Mouawad Watches.
WorldTempus: Is there a new direction from Mouawad with regards to timepieces?
Alain Mouawad: Yes we are producing our own movements, such as the chrono-monopusher flying tourbillon and also a perpetual calendar.
How many different collections do you currently have and are you launching any new collections?
We have now three different collections: La Grande Ellipse, La Griffe and La Classique. La Grande Ellipse Chronographe is available in three variations: La Grande Ellipse Royale, which features watches in 18-carat rose gold with some diamond versions; La Grande Ellipse Sport in black DLC and stainless steel or in black DLC and 5N rose gold; La Grande Ellipse Sport Ville in stainless steel or stainless steel and 5N rose gold.
What lies ahead?
At the end of the year, we will launch a new lady watch called “La Bijou” which is more a jewelry piece in its design as you will discover before the end of the year. This jewelry watch will be available in 5N rose gold partly or fully set with diamonds. On top of this, we will have the new Grande Ellipse Lady in rose gold with some part set with diamonds. For Men, 15 timepieces in 5N rose gold within the Grand Ellipse Collection will be equipped with an alarm additional movement and will be proposed with two different dials. Furthermore, each year we are unveiling three collections in limited editions, this year for example, within the Grande Ellipse Collection, we will propose 12 chrono-monopusher flying tourbillons in rose gold and two unique pieces of a minute repeater tourbillon in rose gold.”
How is Mouawad changing its watch business?
Mouawad is establishing itself as a real watchmaking company – in our site Les Breleux (Franches-Montagnes) we are producing our cases and in Carouge (Geneva) we have a research and development unit as well as watchmakers who assemble the in-house complications. Mouawad is making all the required efforts and investments to become a real watchmaking company with the development and production of our in-house movements in order to produce innovative complications. We have also a passion for sourcing and acquiring exceptional diamonds; we sometimes use them in incredible masterpieces of jewelry. Next year will be the Mouawad year, as we will celebrate our 125th anniversary. We will continue to enchant our customers with new products such as perfume, pens, and leather goods... Our vision is to continue the rich heritage of Mouawad by maintaining the focus on fine jewelry and watches while widening distribution through contemporary and accessible price points in order to increase the reach of the brand internationally.”
