A week of interviews

We collared some industry executives for interviews before they head off on holiday, tested an ultra-rare Hysek and looked at the stories behind watch names. Read all about it this week on WorldTempus.

As watch brands rush to resupply their retailers and plan their advertising campaigns and product launches for September, it can sometimes be as difficult to catch up with a busy executive for a chat as it is during the SIHH and Baselworld.

“Jean-Claude Biver is a genius of the industry who rightly merits a biography”

Paul O'Neil

Nevertheless, we have managed to talk to bosses at three big brands over the past couple of weeks and hope to have all three interviews online this week. We start today with Alexander Schmiedt, the head of watchmaking at Montblanc, who presented the brand’s new Bohème collection to me. Later this week we will carry two interviews with new arrivals who took up their posts in January this year: on the one hand Jean-Pierre Mansvelt, who was interviewed by Nazanin Lankarani; on the other, I spoke to Antonio Calce, who joined the Sowind Group at the start of the year with responsibility for the Girard-Perregaux and JeanRichard brands.

After presenting the unique pieces that will feature in this year’s Only Watch auction, I took a brief look at the 193 entrants in the GPHG 2015 last week. Saving the horological analysis for the 72 shortlisted watches that will be announced after the first round of voting, I concentrated on hard statistics, with some interesting conclusions.

Our contributor Olivier Müller was lucky enough to be given a rare Hysek IO skeleton tourbillon to try out for a week. You can read his review later this week on the site. Taking a wider view, Marie de Pimodan-Bugnon reveals some of the stories behind the names of the most legendary watch collections.

And don’t forget our daily competitions throughout the summer. The first month is nearly over, but there are still two to go!
