Piaget boldly marries mechanical and quartz-driven horology in a high-tech feat.

At the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH 2016) in Geneva, Piaget will present one of its latest creations, the Emperador Coussin XL 700P. This commemorative watch will celebrate the 40th launch anniversary of the first Manufacture Piaget quartz movement, the ultra-thin Calibre 7P introduced in 1976.

In addition to its emblematic brand-signature design, this timepiece embodies an impressive technical feat: the successful alliance between a mechanical movement and quartz technology. These two fields of horological expertise generally refer to distinct operating modes of separate timepieces. Now, for the first time at Piaget, the reliability and precision of electronic Swiss made regulation are combined with a mechanical calibre featuring an iconic reverse construction.

This reverse construction provides a chance to admire through the dial side the main functional elements of the timepiece, with the rotor and off-centred generator forming a figure 8 widely regarded as a lucky number and a symbol of infinity. The also offset hours and minutes hands sweep over radiating finely tapered hour-markers. Powered by an ultra-thin mechanical movement, this new timepiece stems from two years of research and development. The movement, a self-winding calibre with electronic regulation, comprises a high-frequency quartz generator oscillating at 32,768 Hz, thereby controlling the rotation speed of the generator and of the going train. This new calibre ensures enhanced precision, resistance to magnetic fields as well as being insensitive to gravity.

Clearly marking its membership of Piaget’s Black Tie collection, the Emperador Coussin XL 700P is notably dial-free and thus affords the pleasure of observing the cushion-shaped movement. The latter displays a guilloché micro-rotor adorned with the Piaget coat-of-arms along with meticulous finishing featuring satin-brushed wheels and silver-toned screws, as well as sunburst and chamfered bridges hollowed out to create a more transparent look. The 46.5mm.diameter white gold cushion-shaped case is topped by a rounded bezel, also in gold with a black ADLC coating.

The DNA of the Manufacture is matched by a distinctive Piaget aesthetic. This anniversary watch mingling tradition and innovation will be issued in a 118-piece limited edition.
