Newsletter Legends both living and of yore

The 23rd of April is a significant date in the Anglo Saxon world for a number of reasons. In addition to being the date of birth and death of William Shakespeare (as well as that of your editor-in-chief!).

The 23rd of April is also the date of the martyrdom of St. George, the patron saint of England famous as a protector from medieval times through the legend of him slaying a dragon. It was the perfect date, therefore, for Urwerk to launch their new UR-105M timepiece, which takes its inspiration directly from the suit of armour of a medieval knight, as St. George was often portrayed.

Creatures both real and mythical will also feature on WorldTempus this week as David Chokron reviews some of the animal-themed watches that he saw at Baselworld this year, with the subjects going far beyond the obvious equine inspiration from this year’s Chinese Year of the Horse.

If such imagery is not your cup of tea, then I can highly recommend an interview with a more tangible legend who has a direct link with the world of watches. Miguel Seabra took one of the last opportunities available to interview Jack Heuer during Baselworld, discussing his recently-published biography. More than just an enthralling account of his life, this book is also a pocket history of the watch industry. Look out for Miguel’s article this week and read it through to the end – you may just find an extra bonus.
