The Richard Lange collection that was introduced in 2006 perpetuates the tradition of scientific observation watches with this platinum model displaying time with strict and rigorous precision.

When it comes to punctuality, there are two worlds. A first in which arriving quarter of an hour late for an appointment is regarded as a token of respect. And a second in which “on the dot” means just that and punctuality is regarded as a regal virtue. In this kingdom of precision, the new Richard Lange Jumping Seconds unveiled at the 2016 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie has been majestically enthroned for the past few days in the brand’s boutiques. Only 100 of them are available: will you get there in time to strap one to your wrist?

Precision and legibility

When it comes to mechanical exactness, this contemporary interpretation of scientific observation watches has not usurped its crown. In developing this platinum model, A. Lange & Söhne set itself two objectives: optimal precision and maximum readability. It has reached its goal on all levels! To achieve this, the German Manufacture has relied on peerless expertise in the development of high-quality mechanical movements. A rich experience that has enabled it to envisage a clever combination of two complementary mechanisms: a constant-force one-second escapement on the one hand, and a jumping mechanism on the other.

Seconds play the star

A supremely classical complication, jumping seconds – also known as deadbeat seconds – take center-stage here. It draws all eyes to its position in the upper part of the regulator-type dial, where its large size and blue color ensure it plays a starring role. Then come the other two time units: hours at 7 o’clock, appearing on a more modest subdial punctuated by Roman numerals; and a 4 o’clock minutes hand sweeping over slender hour-markers interspersed with Arabic numerals. At the intersection of the three auxiliary dials, a red indicator warns the wearer of the watch that there are 10 hours left before the movement’s energy reserve is entirely depleted. Steadily beating behind the scenes, the new Manufacture Caliber L094.1 owes its regularity to its twin gear trains. The first activates the balance and the barrel in order to transmit the energy in regular fashion by a constant-force escapement, while the barrel of the second gear train powers the jumping mechanism. This ingenious development results in peerless precision that A. Lange & Söhne complements with a remarkable function: the zero-reset mechanism ensuring smooth and reliable resetting of the seconds. Readability, user friendliness and precision are thus guaranteed to the nearest second!
