Carl F. Bucherer - Heritage Chrono BiCompax Annual

Carl F. Bucherer Heritage Chrono BiCompax Annual

Carl F. Bucherer has delved back into its past to revive a historic 1950s piece, which is now part of the Heritage collection.

This year at Baselworld, Carl F. Bucherer unveils the second member of its Heritage collection, which debuted last autumn with the Heritage Tourbillon Double Peripheral Limited Edition. The year 2018 was the 130th anniversary of the Lucerne watchmaker; the launch of the Tourbillon Double Peripheral marked the high point of a year devoted to commemorating the rich heritage, long tradition and watchmaking savoir-faire of the brand founded in 1888 by Carl F. Bucherer in Lucerne, and which today remains one of the very few watchmakers still in the hands of its founding family. They could not have found a better time to launch the Heritage collection.

The Heritage Chrono BiCompax Annual unveiled in Basel is another entirely legitimate addition to a collection dedicated to the brand’s patrimony. It draws its inspiration from a Carl F. Bucherer chronograph from the 1950s. This gold watch with a modest diameter of 34 mm in keeping with the tastes of the time, was classic yet with a sporty touch: it had a chronograph function, with minutes and seconds counters horizontally aligned across the dial, controlled by slim pushers on either side of the crown, plus a tachymetric scale.  The late 1940s saw Carl F. Bucherer launch a number of sports chronographs, following on from its first women’s watch collection in the early 20s. The brand was also one of the first Swiss watchmakers to switch from pocket watches to wristwatches. Carl F. Bucherer chronographs from the 50s were unusual in that they featured what is known as a large date complication. This means that the date is displayed on two independent rotating discs, one for the tens and the other for the units, presented in a highly legible large window. Today, the Patravi collection continues the big date tradition.

The bicompax display, big date, tachymetric scale and vertical chronograph pushers of the new 2019 Heritage Chrono BiCompax Annual are all visible reminders of its parentage. The font of the Arabic numerals and the domed sapphire glass are also taken from the 1950s model.

Reworked in a more contemporary 41 mm diameter, the Heritage Chrono BiCompax Annual comes in two versions, each with a different look, depending on the colour. The full steel version comes with a silvered dial and black markers. The perforated rubber strap enhances its sporty credentials. The second version also has a steel case, but embellished with an 18-karat rose gold bezel, pushers and crown, and a champagne dial. This unapologetically traditional vintage model comes on a cognac calf leather strap which perfectly complements the pink gold. Both models are in a limited edition of 888, a nod to the year of the company’s creation.

As its name suggests, the new model differs from the original by the addition of an annual calendar. The big date aperture at 12 o’clock is joined by the current month, displayed between 4 and 5 o’clock. The CFB 1972 calibre that drives the watch provides enough energy to keep it running for 42 hours between windings.

With this new model, Carl F. Bucherer offers vintage chrono lovers an alternative to the retro Manero Flyback, which has a similar horizontal bicompax architecture and tachymetric scale. The only downside is that they are now forced to choose between the two! The watches do, however, offer different functions, and the Manero Flyback, launched last year, has a sportier appeal.

Price of the Heritage Chrono BiCompax Annual:
