Tourbillon Signature Mystérieuse “Fleur de Sel.”

New to the scene in 2020 is the brand Charles Girardier, which is making its modern-day debut with the Tourbillon Signature Mystérieuse “Fleur de Sel”, a finalist in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Ladies’ Complication category. An 18thcentury watchmaker from Geneva, Charles Girardier specialized in pocket watches with two key characteristics: grand feu enamel and “Jacquemarts” automatons. Ushering Charles Girardier into the 21st century, the brand’s first chapter takes the form of a watch featuring a 37mm white gold case and a self-winding movement. Endowed with a 46-hour power reserve, the caliber powers not only the hours and minutes but also the rotating disks of the mysterious automaton “signature” with the pivoting C&G initials visible through a 12 o’clock dial aperture. At 6 o’clock, a flying tourbillon with a diamond-set tourbillon cage makes one revolution per minute. The attention to detail is evident not only in the movement’s finishes but also in the work on the dial, which is made of soft blue grand feu enamel offset with silver paillons. The paillons in this case are flakes cut in leaf motifs and applied on the enamel dial, which was painted over a guilloché pattern before being fired in a kiln at 800 degrees Celsius. The whole is covered in translucent enamel and fired again in order to set it in place, the ultimate stage in a delicate process that is a true testament to Charles Girardier’s legacy.
