Esplendidos Misterio - Cuervo y Sobrinos
At Baselworld 2014, Cuervo y Sobrinos unveiled the “Esplendidos Misterio”, an exclusive model whose world premiere reveals an unusual face, surprising in how it visualizes passing time.

The traditional case in the Esplendidos collection holds a remarkable dial showing the passage of time in a wholly new way. Ideated and created by the brand’s expert watchmakers, it stems from a reflection about contemporary life: in today’s advanced-technology society people have a variety of electronic tools to tell them what time it is. So the watch no longer plays its primary role of time-telling but takes on a different one imprinted with the playful and emotional value so appreciated by lovers of fine watches.

This philosophical concept, together with the continual research into technical innovations that has always distinguished Cuervo y Sobrinos, has led to creation of “Esplendidos Misterio” in which the hours are read in an unusual way and the minutes can be read with quarter-hour approximation. Instead of the usual hands, hours and minutes are shown on a rotating disc that comes full circle in 12 hours.

So as the disc rotates one’s eyes are immediately caught by the big number representing the hour and effortlessly turn to the nearby red hand that shows the minutes. In addition, outstanding in the center is the second hand, shaped like a disc, while the date is located at 6. The arrows indicate the minutes, which are printed on the dial where the sector corresponding to an hour is divided into 4 parts of fifteen minutes each.

The watch’s precision is ensured by a highly reliable, self-winding mechanical movement: the CyS caliber 5102 developed on an ETA 2892-A2 base and personalized in its finish with the CyS fan and logo etched on the rotor.

The quality of the creation can be seen in extreme care for every detail. The steel case, exquisitely art deco in design, is distinctive for its ample size, convex shapes and perfect ergonomics. The dial, which comes in cream or black, is decorated with the word “misterio” positioned symmetrically to the Cuervo y Sobrinos emblem, and features four applied indices. The rear case, closed with four screws, is embellished with an engraving of the door of the old safe kept in the “Boutique Museo”, the flagship store in Havana. The watch’s fine look is completed with a premium Louisiana alligator strap, and the timepiece also comes in a jewel version with a pavé of brilliant-cut diamonds on the case making it even more valuable and exclusive.
