A watch icon with a bizarre name, IWC in Canada, and the final days of our Big Summer Competition.

What do Gary Cooper, Andy Warhol, Catherine Deneuve and Emmanuel Macron have in common? Yes, they have all worn the same watch. The Tank de Cartier, a horological icon, celebrates its one-hundredth anniversary this year. Back in 1926, it was spotted in a Rudolph Valentino film, well before the concept of product placement, and since that time this timeless watch has been photographed on the wrists of countless celebrities, including that of the recently elected President of France. Today, we take a look back at the history of a watch named after an engine of war, in preparation for a rundown of the latest 2017 models. The Zenith Defy Lab, which was unveiled this week, is characterised by its innovative technology – a feature of our time – rather than the style that has defined the appeal and secured the longevity of the Tank. But will it be as successful? We certainly hope so.

Anniversaries and the cinema also feature in Roberta Naas’s article on IWC, which you can read tomorrow. The Schaffhausen company has recently enjoyed an enhanced media profile in Canada – which this year celebrates the 150th anniversary of its foundation – due to the opening of a new boutique, a special edition of the Portugieser, and its involvement in the Toronto International Film Festival.

Today, in an interview with Paul O’Neil, Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele gives a comprehensive overview of all matters connected with his brand, from precision certification and manufacture movements to the company’s partnership with Porsche Motorsport. And, while we’re on the subject of cars, another major luxury brand based in Geneva is due to make an important announcement on Thursday, which will be reported by our editor-in-chief. We can’t say any more today, so stay tuned to WorldTempus!
