1948 For Him Réveil - Eterna
2 minutes read
Having worn the vintage 1948 For Him Réveil by Eterna for a few weeks, it’s time to share some of my impressions.

Eterna, which celebrates its 160th anniversary this year, rediscovered 70 historic alarm clock movements by chance. The company therefore decided to give a contemporary makeover to an iconic watch from the Heritage collection, and the result is the new 1948 For Him. This alarm watch combines classic Eterna style with an impressive technical pedigree. We had the opportunity to borrow the watch for a few weeks. As the name suggests, it is in fact a man’s watch, but given that I tend to prefer men’s watches over more feminine models, I didn’t take much persuading to volunteer for the role of guinea pig. This is the report of my trial of the 1948 For Him.

On the wrist
This “new” timepiece with its vintage movement comes in a polished and satin-brushed stainless-steel 40 mm case, which is not too big and not too small. In fact, it’s a perfect fit on my rather slim wrist. The clean, elegant, discreet styling made it enjoyable to wear in a variety of circumstances: at work, on business trips, hiking in the mountains, even during a beach holiday. However, its undeniably masculine allure prevents it from being the ideal match with ladies’ evening wear. But it is a perfect accessory “For Him”! Its discreet lines and minimalist dial are key to making it the ideal watch for all occasions – but definitely for a man.

In terms of its design, the vintage touches are particularly appealing, with its matt eggshell dial and classic Arabic indices, although I generally prefer Roman numerals. The elegant black leather strap is also very comfortable to wear.

No cause for alarm
Perhaps the main distinction of this watch lies in its history: it is equipped with a 1475 movement with hour, minute, second and alarm functions, a few examples of which were found by chance in Eterna’s archives. This one-shot alarm watch is therefore an exceptional piece whose rarity is guaranteed: just seventy will be available. The alarm function is governed by a fourth red-tipped hand, which is set and activated by means of a pusher at 2 o’clock. When the alarm is activated, don’t expect any shrill ringing or cathedral chimes: there’s just a firm vibration on the wrist which lasts approximately 12 seconds. This vintage gem, part of Eterna’s Heritage collection, has a 46-hour power reserve and is available for just CHF 4,900.

Opinions
My colleagues and friends had plenty of opportunity to take a good look at the watch, and even try out the alarm function, which they all found ingenious and practical. Like me, they also appreciated the vintage eggshell dial and retro design. The alarm function was easy to use and turned out to be much more useful than I had anticipated, prompting me with discreet reminders throughout the day.
