Lady Compliquée: a success story

Lady Compliquée: a success story - Fabergé
Fabergé’s Lady Compliquée will be returning to this year’s Baselworld with new gems and new colours.

Although Fabergé has not announced any new models ahead of Baselworld, it has dropped a number of hints that some of its watch models – perhaps the Winter or the Peacock – will be revisited for the occasion. Precious stones will be the focus, so we can assume that the Lady Compliquée will be dressed in vivid colours.

Let us not forget that Fabergé is a jewellery house with a mastery of superior craftsmanship and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of creativity and savoir-faire. Last year’s emblematic model, the Lady Compliquée, perpetuated the high jewellery tradition with an astonishing and innovative way of telling the time. There are no hands: the hour is read off at the crown at 3 o’clock from a circular mother-of-pearl ring that rotates anti-clockwise, while the minutes are indicated by the sculpted feathers of a peacock’s tail on the left-hand side of the dial.

Diamonds and mother-of-pearl

The Lady Compliquée Peacock is a vision of white and subtle pastel shades with snow-set diamonds, mother-of-pearl, Paraiba tourmalines and tsavorites. Driven by a manually-wound mechanical movement with a 50-hour power reserve, the timepiece features hour and retrograde minutes. The new retrograde calibre has a unique mechanism that pushes the four peacock feather panels simultaneously but at different speeds, a remarkable technical feat. With its 38 mm platinum case and bezel set with 54 brilliant-cut diamonds, the Peacock’s pure and ethereal design makes it enchantingly feminine.

Winter is coming

The Lady Compliquée Winter is no less charming than the seductive peacock. In shades of pale blue reminiscent of ice, wind and winter light, this timepiece works in a similar manner to its sister, but has a more minimalist design. In place of the peacock is a simple blue fan depicting a winter landscape of bare-branched trees, which uses a retrograde mechanism to indicate the hour and minute.

New watches for Baselworld 2016

Fabergé is giving nothing away for the moment, preferring to leave Baselworld a total surprise. But one thing is certain, the success of the Lady Compliquée Peacock has given the jewellery house ample reason to reinvent this rather unusual ladies’ timepiece. A version in three different colours is on the cards. What colours? We’ll have to wait for Basel to find out.
