How a blockbuster film inspired a timepiece

Following on from the success of the Opera Godfather Minute Repeater and the Opera Scarface, Jacob & Co. is back with another Hollywood blockbuster collaboration in the form of the Fast & Furious Twin Turbo. This limited edition of nine pieces has been created to coincide with Universal Pictures’ Fast & Furious 9 film release, which will hit movie theatres this summer.

Based on the Jacob & Co. Twin Turbo Furious timepiece that combines two high-speed triple-axis tourbillons, a decimal minute repeater, a monopusher chronograph and a mechanical time reference indication, this new version adds a number of design details from the Fast & Furious films.

“Our Twin Turbo Furious is such a natural fit for the Fast & Furious franchise,” says Benjamin Arabov, Jacob & Co. CEO. “Not only the name of our watch but the whole emphasis on speed and being exceptional. Jacob & Co. has been in many important and successful partnerships, but we have never partnered with an entity that so closely fits our DNA. The new Fast & Furious Twin Turbo Furious watches are going to be awesome.”

A Fast & Furious Dial

One of the most famous scenes takes place in the very first film, where a girl stands in front of two hot rod cars, waving checkered flags above her head to start the race. This scene, and the Fast & Furious logo, have been reproduced directly onto the dial of the timepiece above the twin triple-axis tourbillons, creating a strong visual connection to the film.

Other more subtle Fast & Furious racing details include a power reserve indicator in the form of a fuel gauge, and a mechanical time reference indicator, based on the old-school handheld pit boards that racing crews used to use to communicate pace times with drivers.

All the Technical Details

This new limited edition comes in a 57mm x 52mm forged carbon case that is comprised of 88 pieces alone, attesting to the complexity of the piece. But this is nothing in comparison to the manual-winding Calibre JCFM05 that is composed of a spectacular 832 components and features a number of complications.

The twin triple-axis tourbillons turn at speeds of 24, 48, and 180 seconds along the three axes of rotation, while the monopusher chronograph takes care of the start, stop and reset all via one pusher. The decimal minute repeater is the most unusual complication as it chimes the time on demand at 10-minute intervals after the hours and before the minutes. Most minute repeaters function with a quarter-hour chime, making this version quite rare.

The Fast & Furious Franchise

The Fast & Furious series is one of the most successful series of films, taking in close to $6 billion at the box office to date. It is the most-profitable and longest-running franchise for Universal Pictures and has expanded to include a multitude of merchandise including toys and video games, an all-new animated series, and now this high-end luxury limited edition timepiece.

For fans of the film and lovers of high-end complications, the Fast & Furious Twin Turbo will certainly get pulses racing, but with only nine pieces available, you may want to rush over to a Jacob & Co. boutique soon (just watch out for the speed cameras)!
