While the figure 8 continues to deploy the power of its positive symbolism across Jaquet Droz’s iconic dial, the collection is welcoming seven new models subtly revisited and composing a new line. The creation of an intermediate diameter of 41mm for the Grande Seconde Quantième has thus been accompanied by a more contemporary take on this timeless classic. The most visible evolution is reflected in the choice of dials, which are enriched by new color variations. Acknowledged by collectors and art lovers, Jaquet Droz’s enamel dial expertise has enabled it to develop new shades.
Perfectly mastered selection of powders and firing techniques endow the watch with visual harmony accentuated by the refined graphic design of the functions. They catch the eye with their anthracite, blue, burgundy or ivory tones. At the same time, three other dial versions further extend the range of available colors with sandblasted silver-toned, sandblasted titanium gray and matt black variations. The cleverly structured timekeeping and calendar indications live in a state of osmosis, coming together in the dial center where the date of the 31st stands out in red, apparently suspended between two worlds of time swept over by the slender and elegant large seconds hand.
The understated symmetry is gently perturbed by the inscription “Made in Switzerland” between the dates 19 and 23 (indicated by a red-tipped hand), counterbalancing the visual presence of the notched crown which itself appears to echo the gold hour-markers on the upper part of the dial. The case has also been redesigned, offering wearers in even slimmer and lighter look and feel. It is crafted from polished red gold to accommodate the four dials in Grand Feu enamel, and from steel for the three other iterations.
In the noblest versions, the skillfully orchestrated of the oscillating weight visible through the back of the watch also gives a special glow to the red gold. Devotees of fine watchmaking will appreciate the craftsmanship lavished on the self-winding movement. The latter’s isochronism is enhanced by the use of silicon for its balance-spring, making it less sensitive to factors that usually disturb it, such as shocks, temperature variations and magnetism. In the steel versions, the more modern aesthetic is teamed with matching straps embellished with matching straps in “velvettouch” calfskin, rather than alligator leather as on the gold models. The Grande Seconde Quantième thus remains an enduring touchstone of contemporary haute horlogerie, even almost three centuries after the appearance of its first design.
