If you are a lover of diamonds, and of tourbillons, I can only suggest that you not take a closer look at the newest Kerbedanz Maximus Royal watch – ensconced in nearly 500 baguette-cut diamonds and featuring what may well be the world’s largest tourbillon escapement.

A relatively young brand, Kerbedanz is an independent brand based in Neuchatel, Switzerland, that turns to symbolism for its artistic and technologically advanced timepieces. Hailing from a family of jewelers, Tigran Kerbedanz, founder of the eponymous brand, pays homage to his family artisanry not only in the name of the brand, but also in the exclusivity and beauty of his timepieces. The newest Maximus Royal Tourbillon is no exception. In fact, just 14 pieces will be made, each with its own unique hue.

The Maximus Royal Tourbillon is the newest generation of the Maximus Tourbillon, born two years ago in 2017. That watch boasted the world’s largest flying tourbillon escapement – measuring 27mm in diameter and placed directly in the center of the watch. That watch, with two patents pending, including one for its toothed-wheel winding system, is the basis for the new Maximus Royal Tourbillon. The new version, though, is bedecked with 453 invisibly set baguette-cut diamonds weighing 18.47 carats. The watch features a diamond case, bezel, inner ring and lugs.

The version depicted herein is crafted in 18-karat white gold, however each of the 14 models is totally customizable, - allowing the customer to select from any of the precious and noble metals of gold or platinum, or from titanium with or without black treatment. Additionally, the customer can choose to set the watch not just with diamonds, but with any gemstone of choice, including colored diamonds, emeralds, rubies, or other precious or semi-precious stones. The customer can also choose from the cut of the stone. Each watch is engraved with the inscription, “One of Fourteen.”

The 51mm watch features a movement that was inspired by the 600 BC horse-and-chariot-racing field in Rome, Circus Maximus. The oversized tourbillon cage rotates once every six minutes and features a platform with fine adjustment screws and a pendulum – all beautifully visible on the dial side. The tourbillon - consisting of 73 components in titanium and weighing 1.35 grams - seems to fly in the middle of the watch, thanks to a box-like sapphire crystal that allows for viewing of the movement. The watch also boasts a sapphire caseback.

The mechanical, hand-wound Caliber KRB-08 movement consists of a massive 415 components, each finely finished and polished by hand. The balance wheel and hairspring have been created especially for this watch, which beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour. Thanks to four barrel springs in parallel and mounted on ball bearings, the watch is endowed with 54 hours of power reserve. The watch is finished with an alligator strap and gold buckle, however, here, again, the buyer can personalize his or her strap choice. While I could never fathom why someone would want to wear this beauty in the water, it is water resistant to 30 meters.
