Sizing up the 2018 collection - Panerai
2 minutes read
Panerai had something up its sleeve at both ends of the watchmaking spectrum at this year’s SIHH.

In addition to presenting one of the most complicated watches at the show [], Panerai also fulfilled long-standing customer wishes by presenting the smallest ever Panerai watch with new 38mm diameter models in the Luminor Due collection. As well as adhering to the general trend for smaller watches, Panerai also followed that seen for more conservative designs with new “Base” models (with just hour and minute hands) in the standard 44mm diameter case. These new models also help to reverse another trend – that of the gradual increase over the past few years in the average price of a Panerai.

Let’s start with the new smallest models with the 38mm case diameter. A total of four new references are available with a clear intention to appeal to men and women in equal measure, whether they are looking for a case in stainless steel or red gold. For the former, PAM 903 pairs an ivory dial and blue leather strap for a unisex appeal, while the mint green leather strap of PAM 755 is more likely to appeal to women. In gold, PAM 756 with the ivory dial takes on a more feminine aesthetic, while the black dial of PAM 908 offers classic masculine appeal. These models start from a respectable €5,900 and will be available in stores from June 2018.

Two new references are available in the slightly larger 42mm diameter in the Luminor Due case, both in stainless steel. The ivory dial is also used here, complete with the almost full hour circle (PAM 906), whereas the black dial version retains the classic oversized 12 and 6 and the baton hour markers (PAM 904). Also available from June 2018, these two models come at a modest premium over the smaller version, at €6,200. All of these new models in the Luminor Due line are equipped with the OP XXXIV automatic calibre, with small seconds display at 9 o’clock, three-day power reserve and, for the first time in this collection, a date window at 3.

Those looking for more technicality will find it in two new Luminor Due models in a 45mm stainless-steel case. PAM 943 uses the P. 4001 automatic calibre with power reserve indicator on the back of the movement (visible through a transparent sapphire crystal), while the P. 4002 calibre in the PAM 944 displays the power reserve on the brushed anthracite dial, along with an additional GMT hand. PAM 943 will retail for €9,800, while PAM 944 will sell for €10,800.

There is good news for the budding Paneristi in the brand’s more traditional case sizes, too, with classic appeal at affordable prices on offer in the 44mm Luminor case. A total of six new references, three in the “Base” configuration and three Luminor Marina models with small seconds, have been launched for 2018 with prices starting at just €4,600. The price is all the more attractive when you consider the fact that these new models use a new in-house movement, the manually wound P. 6000 calibre with three-day power reserve, which means that all Panerai watches will henceforth use in-house calibres. As yet another first, these models also come with the first textile straps offered by Panerai.
