Colourful Altiplano watches for men - Piaget
2 minutes read
With three sizes and three colours to choose from in the new Altiplano Anniversary collection, men are spoilt for choice.

The 60th anniversary collection celebrates the distinctive style of the original 1957 Altiplano by borrowing some of its unique features: delicate ultra-thin cases, slim applied hour markers with a double index at 12 o’clock, the historic “Piaget automatique” logo or a discreet centred cross on a timeless, and the elegantly expansive dial. They are driven by movements whose reliability and beauty make them worthy successors to the manually wound extra-thin calibre 9P from 1957, which was 2 mm thick, and the automatic calibre 12P with its famous off-centre gold micro-rotor, unveiled in 1960, with a depth of just 2.3 mm. These ultra-thin movements were what helped Piaget to develop a new, delicate and pure watchmaking style that was nevertheless capable of adapting to prevailing fashions over its 60-year history, and which icons of masculine charm including Alain Delon or, more recently, Ryan Reynolds can pull off with an air of classy insouciance.

The Altiplano 60th Anniversary model that wears best on a slimmer man’s, or even a woman’s wrist, comes in a diameter of 38 mm. The case in 18-karat white gold frames a blue dial with gold applied markers, and it is the only model in the 2017 collection to contain a manually wound movement. A descendant of the famous 9P calibre, this 430P movement has its 131 parts contained within an elegant structure just 2.1 mm thick. The circular-grained baseplate, chamfered bridges, blued screws and circular Geneva striping add to the beauty of the movement, which governs the hour and minute hands and can run for 43 hours when fully wound. The Altiplano 38 mm, in a limited edition of 460, comes with a blue alligator strap secured with an 18-karat white gold pin buckle.

In the Altiplano 40 mm trilogy, the choice of colours and case materials is wider, with three dial options and three shades of gold. The white gold case is paired with a slate grey dial, while the yellow gold watch has a pine green dial; the third version, in rose gold, contrasts with a lustrous blue. The 40 mm models are the only watches in the 2017 anniversary collection to feature a date window, which is located at 3 o’clock on the graduated dial. They are driven by the new 3.0 mm ultra-thin automatic calibre 1203P, inspired by the 1205P movement of 2013 but with the addition of a date. The gold rotor, engraved with a P for Piaget, provides a power reserve of 44 hours. The movement with its 209 parts is decorated in a similar fashion to the 430P described above. These three Altiplano 40 mm models are produced in limited editions of 260 each.

With a diameter of 43 mm, the automatic version in white gold with a blue dial may be the biggest of the Altiplano 60th anniversary models, but it sacrifices none of its unpretentious elegance. The hour and minute functions are managed by the automatic 2.35 mm extra-thin Manufacture Piaget calibre 1200P, which was first released in 2010 for the 50th anniversary of the 12P. Its satin-brushed gears and gold rotor with anthracite grey coating, decorated with the Piaget crest, are visible through the sapphire caseback. This timepiece, available in a limited edition of 360, will be available in shops from April 2017, along with all the other models in the Altiplano 60th Anniversary collection.
