Elegance Doesn’t Have To Be Traditional - Unexpected classics
3 minutes read
This spring as you are slowly re-emerging from behind closed doors and looking to add a little classic elegance to your style, think outside of the box when it comes to watches

Spring is in the air and people everywhere are starting to be a little more hopeful about the pandemic being over soon. We’re venturing out a little more and even visiting the office a few days a week. With that in mind, many men and women are looking to add a little class and flair to their style and donning a watch is the perfect way to do this. The thing is you don’t have to go for a traditional classic watch to add finesse to your look.

You can think outside the “classic icons” box and look toward watches from brands that traditionally may be flamboyant or over the top, but that have a toned-down classic side, as well. Alternatively, if you really want to have the tried-and-true classic brand on your wrist—pick a watch that is not the “sure-bet” most-in-demand line. You won’t go wrong. Trust me. There are some great unexpected classic watches on the market.

For instance, if you want to go with a brand you haven’t considered in the past, but still want to play it somewhat safe, take a look at the traditionally loud statement makers and pick a sibling. Consider Hublot, which is all about big, loud, colorful, three-dimensional type watches, but actually has a really nice look with the Classic Fusion line. Skip the mega-complicated MP, the oversized tonneau Spirit of Big Bang, and even the Unico Red Carbon or bright orange sapphire watches. Instead, take a look at the 45mm Classic Fusion Titanium watch. It is crafted in a light-weight material with a satin and polished finish. Powered by the Hublot HUB 1112 self-winding movement, the watch boasts a black dial with markers, date and seconds hand. Classic, clean and a nice eyecatcher. Plus, it retails for $7,300, so it won’t break the bank like some of the other Hublot watches.

The same is true of MB&F, which has so much to stay about space and cars (as well as frogs and bulldogs) in its three-dimensional interpretations of watches. However, you can still get depth, dimension and superb classic elegance if you turn to one of the Legacy Machines. The Legacy Machines are MB&F’s only round watch and there are a host of choices for both men and women. The Legacy Machine Perpetual or FlyingT are great choices if you have a collector’s appetite and wallet.

If you want a more recognizable name on your wrist, such as Rolex or Audemars Piguet, try opting for a line that is a little off the beaten path – just to set yourself apart. While everyone is clamoring for a Rolex Pepsi or the Cosmograph Daytona, take a look at the Cellini Moonphase. Crafted in the brand’s proprietary 18-karat Everose gold, the 39mm watch is perfect for men or women. It features a white lacquer dial with a blue enamel moonphase disk at 6:00. Subtle touches like the domed and fluted bezel and the Rolex crown logo at 12:00 underscore the fact that this unexpected classic is a Rolex.

Similarly, while collectors are all looking for the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Royal Oak Offshore, take a second look at the relatively new Code 11.59 round watch. With no real bezel, the dial of this watch speaks volumes. Some of the newest renditions boast sunray dials in a host of colors, and the double curved sapphire crystal offers great observation abilities. Particularly appealing is the self-winding three-hands with date with a gray to black sunburst lacquered dial.

Either way you opt to go, just remember the idea is to tell a story and get people talking. An unexpected classis makes a great conversation starter.
