In Swiss watchmaking, the "comptoir" was first a trading office and then rapidly turned into an organisation that controlled manufacturing as well as trade. It evolved into a watch finishing workshop, storing parts, tools, semi-processed raw materials and, generally speaking, all watch products. It later referred to commercial agencies established by a nation in a foreign country: Comptoir (or trading post) of the Indies, China etc.
