Glashütte Original

Glashütte Original is the rightful heir to Germany’s 170 years of legacy in the art of watchmaking. Glashütte Original is an authentic high-end manufactory that outfits all of its watches with in-house developed and made movements.

About

Glashütte is first and foremost the town at the centre of German watchmaking – from which the legendary manufacture takes its name.

In 1878 watchmaker Moritz Grössmann, under the impetus of Ferdinand Lange (of Lange & Söhne), founded a watchmaking school in Glashütte that was to become the cradle of future watchmaking generations.

With two world wars taking up most of the first half of the twentieth century, the local economy went into limbo. At the end of these conflicts, the town was taken over by communism, which did not favour the development of the manufacture. The latter did not return to prosperity until after the reunification of Germany in 1989.

The Glashütte Original brand officially came into being in 1994 with the privatisation of “VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe”, an organisation that had grouped together the town's independent watchmakers since 1951. The brand was bought out by the Swatch Group in 2000.

Two years later, Nicolas Hayek Sr, CEO of Glashütte Original, carried on the town of Glashütte's training tradition by setting up a watchmaking school there.

The following year, Glashütte Original inaugurated its new manufacture.

In 2006, the firm presented its Senator line, soon to become a benchmark for its collection.

Collections

20th Century Vintage

As a tribute to the diversity of twentieth-century timepieces, Glashütte Original has created a collection bringing together the essential functions of watchmaking in four different case formats. In this collection, “Navigator” watches are a homage to the models originally designed for the needs of aviation pioneers, while the “Sixties” and “Seventies” lines are a modern reinterpretation of the creations from the decades that changed the world in terms of ideals, music, architecture and design.

Art & Technik

This collection, for which the word “Technik” denotes an alliance of knowledge, skill and craftsmanship, combines technology, a wealth of functions and all the style of grand watchmaking complications. The German word “Technik” is preferred to its English equivalent “technology”, because it is both richer and more appropriate for Glashütte Original watches, evoking as it does a blend of unique knowledge, art and knowhow.

Lady Collection

The finely-jewelled Ladies collection offers two models with round cases and a simple aesthetic appearance, whose vocation is to offer both outer beauty thanks to their design – and inner beauty through the movement of their components.

Quintessentials

This traditional collection displays great respect for the fundamental complications of watchmaking. It pays tribute to the heritage of Glashütte Original in the design and assembly of its timepieces and embodies the very essence of Glashütte watchmaking art.
