More than 90 years after its launch, it continues to epitomise the spirit of modernity that inspired its creation. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer therefore dedicates a special exhibition to this iconic timepiece. From October 20th to 30th , the Reverso Stories Experience at Zürich main station offers an immersive journey through nine decades of watchmaking craftmanship, complete with the revelation of artworks created by renown digital artists Brendi Wedinger and Dr Yiyun Kang for this occasion. It is the first and only stop of this unique exhibition in Switzerland.
Since its foundation 190 years ago, Jaeger-LeCoultre has created and produced over 1’400 different calibres and filed more than 400 patents. La Grande Maison has several world firsts to its credit, along with the legendary patented “swivelling case” of the Reverso watch.
An icon of design and watchmaking
A unique and timeless expression of the Art Deco movement, the legend of the Reverso began in 1931 on the polo fields of India, where the idea of a case that could be flipped over to withstand the rigours of polo matches, was born. With its revolutionary design and immaculate craftsmanship, the Reverso was immediately embraced by trendsetters from all walks of life, quickly transcending its original purpose. Through nine decades the Reverso has continually reinvented itself without ever compromising its identity: it has housed more than 50 different calibres, while its blank metal flip side has become a canvas for creative expression, decorated with enamel, engravings, or gemstones.
Reverso Stories Experience: fascinating retrospective
This is reason enough for the Grande Maison to dedicate a special exhibition to this watch. At the heart of the experience is the Reverso Stories Experience, a fascinating retrospective of Reverso’s history and emblematic models. Jaeger-LeCoultre brings together in one place the Métiers Rares™ of the Manufacture: enamelling, engraving, gemsetting and guilloché work, revealing Reverso as a true canvas for artistic expression.
As a special highlight of the exhibition, the most complicated timepiece ever presented in this emblematic collection will be presented: the Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185, with four functioning faces. Called as well the Reverso Hybris Mechanica “Quadriptyque”, which result of over six years of development, combining key areas of savoir-faire with innovative new astronomical indications, it can predict the next global incidence of astronomical events such as supermoons and eclipses.
Made of Makers: revelation of artworks by Brendi Wedinger and Dr Yiyun Kang
A premiere awaits visitors in the exhibition’s Winter Garden, where artworks created by American digital artist Brendi Wedinger as part of the Made of Makers series will be presented to the public for the first time. The Made of Makers series explores the ties between watchmaking and contemporary art. Wedinger’s artwork for Jaeger-LeCoultre is an homage to a variety of flowers found in the Vallée du Joux, the Maison’s cradle. “Aside from the natural beauty of the valley, I felt very inspired by the high-complication watches and the unique details you find in them. I wanted the flowers to be complex and one-of-a kind, like the watches, with all the beauty and immense detail that can be found in both”, says Brendi.
Another artwork issuing from the Made of Makers series is the art installation Origin by renowned Korean digital media artist Dr Yiyun Kang. Origin is a tribute to the ubiquity of the Golden ratio in the world around us. Through its narrative, it builds a parallel between the symmetry in nature and the geometry of Art Deco Design.
