The modern Ingenieur reinterprets its iconic design in contemporary, meticulously refined form. Since launching in 2023, the Ingenieur has grown into a full collection spanning multiple sizes, materials and complications, and IWC is now celebrating five decades of the Ingenieur SL with two limited editions. Both stand out with their refined brushed silver-plated dials, which are inspired by a rare variant of the Ingenieur SL. A subtly reimagined logo on the dials marks this milestone anniversary.
Fifty years ago, in 1976, IWC Schaffhausen introduced the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832. The successor to the first generation of Ingenieur models was created by none other than Gérald Genta. The Geneva-based artist and watch designer conceived this bold design at the height of his creative powers in the 1970s, a decade in which luxury steel sports watches with integrated bracelets emerged as an entirely new product category within Swiss watchmaking. Despite its forward-looking design language, the Ingenieur SL was not a commercial success at launch. It would take decades for collectors to rediscover the watch – of which between 1976 and 1983 only 598 pieces were made – and today it ranks among the most sought-after models in IWC’s history.
The Ingenieur SL was also the creative blueprint for the modern Ingenieur, launched in 2023. With its bezel secured by five functional screws, structured grid dial and integrated bracelet, it echoes the defining style cues of the Ingenieur SL while pairing them with enhanced ergonomics, wearability and highly detailed finishing. Now, IWC celebrates the 50th anniversary of Genta’s emblematic design with two limited editions of the Ingenieur Automatic, available in 40 and 35 millimeters.
“50 years have passed since my father created the Ingenieur SL, and it amazes me how his work continues to inspire so many people decades later. I am honored to see how IWC is preserving his artistic legacy and building on his iconic design with their new Ingenieur,” says Alexia Genta, daughter of Gérald Genta and co-founder of the Gérald Genta Heritage Association.
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary (Ref. IW328910) and the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary (Ref. IW324909) are each limited to 1,150 pieces. These watches stand out because of their distinct brushed silver-plated dials, inspired by a rare variant of the 1970s Ingenieur SL. While Reference 1832 is mostly known for its structured dial, IWC also introduced one variant featuring a silver-plated dial with a brushed finish. On both anniversary editions, the dials are complemented with rhodium-plated hands and metal hour markers, filled with Super-LumiNova®. Furthermore, a subtle design modification has been made to the logo: the characteristic lightning bolt, typically found below the “Ingenieur” name on the dial, has been replaced with the number “50” to commemorate the anniversary of the Ingenieur SL.
“With its distinctive and bold design, the Ingenieur SL has shaped both the career of Gérald Genta and the history of IWC Schaffhausen. This integrated bracelet luxury sport watch introduced an aesthetic expression and a purist form that has lost none of its power and magic to this day. It is therefore only natural that we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of this icon with two special limited editions featuring distinctive brushed dials,” explains Christian Knoop, Creative Director at IWC Schaffhausen.
Both novelties feature a case and bracelet crafted from stainless steel. The bracelet, attached via its middle links, ensures excellent ergonomics and wearing comfort. The detailed finishing incorporates satin-finishing and polishing. While the bracelet of the 40-millimeter version is satin-finished, the middle links on the 35-millimeter variant are polished. Both models showcase the characteristic bezel, a signature feature of the Ingenieur. Secured to the case with five screws, the bezels are satin-finished and boast polished edges, enhancing the sculptural quality of the Gérald Genta-inspired design.
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32111 caliber. This automatic movement features a double pawl winding system, which generates a power reserve of 120 hours. Like the original Ingenieur SL from the 1970s, the watch features a soft-iron inner case to protect its movement from magnetic fields. The Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary features a see-through sapphire glass case back displaying the IWC Caliber 47110. The movement is finished with circular graining and Geneva stripes and also features a gold- plated oscillating weight.
Evolving into a Comprehensive Collection
Since IWC introduced the new Ingenieur in 2023, the collection has been growing steadily in case sizes, dial colors, materials and complications. Today, the line spans executions ranging from stainless steel, titanium and 18-karat 5N gold to black and colored ceramic. The collection also includes a perpetual calendar and watchmaking’s ultimate complication – the tourbillon.
