Eberhard & Co. Roaring Twenties

Focus on The Chrono 4 "20 Years"

The age of 20 means leaving adolescence behind and entering adulthood, perhaps becoming a little more attentive to your looks, while keeping the full power of a body in top shape. The realities of human morphology are reflected in watchmaking and Eberhard’s new Chrono 4, created in 2001, is indeed heading into this new decade with an equal measure of passion and elegance. While one would wish to avoid the clichés – iconic, unique, etc. – about this now legendary creation, how many chronographs out there feature fully aligned counters? In breaking with the conventional 3-6-9 or 12-3-6 layout, the Chrono 4 displays its singularity as much as its readability. The minutes and hours are read side by side, while seconds remain center-stage, as few would dare to interfere with the sacrosanct sweep-seconds hand. The latter is indeed used as the benchmark for a mind-boggling tachymeter with a graduated scale of up to 800 km/h. Not for the faint-hearted!

As far as decoration is concerned, Eberhard & Co. has opted to play the contrast game, for while the Chrono 4 is (just) into its twenties, the company has 135 years behind it. Plenty enough to have witnessed (and shaped) all manner of watchmaking trends! The brand has indeed chosen one of the oldest motifs of the watchmaking art for its new 42mm Chrono 4 “21-42”: the “Clous de Paris” hobnail pattern composed of tiny pyramids that give the dial a blend of substance and depth. Set against a white background with black subdials, the timepiece evokes the “panda chronograph” of which it could well be seen as the beautiful and rebellious daughter.
