This week, the WorldTempus team are saving the planet in upcycled fishing nets in fuchsia pink

Jordy Bellido

At last, some fun colors for the summer! The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide is a real breath of fresh air with this hot weather! Available in several eye-catching colour variations, this model is more than just a watch. Made of recycled plastic extracted from the oceans - 17 bottles to be exact - this watch is ideal for an active summer as it is not only good looking, but robust and water resistant too. Even if my heart was swinging towards the green version, we decided to test the fuchsia pink model around the office. Needless to say, I did not go unnoticed. I am not sure if it was the brightness of the hue, or the fact that I was a man in pink, or perhaps a bit of both, but I quite enjoyed the attention!  In any case, this Aikon #Tide is doing its bit for the environment and making me stand out from the crowd; what more could I ask for?

I was fortunate enough to have been invited to the launch of the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide in Miami, where I got to discover this watch and its sustainable concept in person. Making a timepiece out of old fishing nets is one thing, but upcycling them into a material that reaches the quality standards of the watchmaking world is quite another. Needless to say, Maurice Lacroix and Tide have done an amazing job here. Since I have been wearing this watch, I have lost count of the number of people who have stopped me to ask about it. Its fuchsia pink case and dial with a sprinkling of diamonds, along with its white rubber strap are perfect for summer. To look down at my wrist and know that it is possible to upcycle ocean waste to make a luxury watch as well as create new streams of revenue for fisherman (who collect the plastic) makes me smile every time I look at the time, and there aren’t many timepieces that can claim to do all that!

The first time I saw this watch was on Sophie's wrist, some time after she returned from Miami where she had attended the launch of Maurice Lacroix's coolest new collection. Since then, not a week goes by without our editorial director wearing her fuchsia pink Aikon #Tide, which brings a real burst of positive energy into the office! Was I also going to fall for this model that definitely doesn’t go unnoticed? Without a doubt! Firstly, I was seduced by its ultra-bright colour and its offbeat look. Secondly, by its sustainable side – the Aikon #Tide is made from recycled plastic waste. And thirdly, by its all-terrain aspect – not only is it water-resistant to 100 metres, ideal for all types of aquatic activities, but it is also particularly robust since the composite material from which it is made is twice as hard and five times more resistant than traditional plastic. The icing on the cake is the interchangeable strap, which allows you to play with colours as much as you want. All the more reason to get caught up in the irresistible Aikon #Tide wave!
