From the Greek "keramos" meaning fired pottery. In watchmaking, aluminium and zirconium oxides (polycrystals) are mainly used in the manufacture of cases and decorative elements, while sapphire (single crystal A1203) is used for glass and rubies (A1203 + Cr203) for stones.
