From 1730 onwards, a new way of wearing watches met with huge success among women and men alike. The watch hung at the front of skirts or breeches from a hook at the end of a metal ch‚telaine pin held at the waist by a wide clip.In the late 18th century, it was fashionable to wear two watches. On 15 April 1790, the "Cabinet des Modes" magazine informed its readers that the "young aristocrats, former nobles, whose hearts have not yet been hardened to crime and who are beginning to fashion themselves in the style of the French Constitution, are wearing the "half-convert" or half-mourning dress: two watches, one on a gold chain and the other on a black ribbon".
