A unit of measurement still used today to describe the size of a watch movement. A 12-ligne calibre (12"). One ligne equals 2.255 mm. In watchmaking, lignes are not accurate descriptions but are an approximate measurement that is set to become obsolete. "Twelfth of a ligne", is a unit still used for cases and equals 0.188 mm.
