Movement of a pendulum or oscillating body within two consecutive extreme positions. An oscillation ("tick-tock") equals two vibrations (the word oscillation is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to a vibration). The speed of a mechanical movement is measured in vibrations per hour, which translates into a frequency per second that can be expressed in Hertz (Hz). Thus an 18,000 vibrations/hr movement is said to beat at 2.5Hz, while a 36,000 vibrations/hr movement beats at 5Hz.
