Virgule escapement Invented in 1753 by Beaumarchais (Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, author of The Barber of Seville, among other things), the verge escapement is replaced by a lever which successively plucks the last wheel of the movement to lock it stationary before releasing it. It is regarded as the forefather of the modern escapement.
