Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece watches

The Maurice Lacroix masterpiece watches are the showcase for the ingenuity of the engineers at Maurice Lacroix and their ability to come up with original new ways of displaying the time. The watches in the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece collection are equipped with a manual or automatic movement that has been developed and produced in-house by Maurice Lacroix. While each watch movement is innovative in its own way, the materials used for the case and strap (all the watches come with a leather strap, there is no steel bracelet available) on the Masterpiece are traditional, such as stainless steel and crocodile leather.

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Gravity watch

Launched in 2014, the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Gravity watch showcases the silicon components in the in-house Maurice Lacroix ML230 automatic movement. At a price starting at $10,500, this Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece watch shares the design traits of a number of much more expensive items you can find and has a case size of 43mm in stainless steel and a lacquered dial with rhodium-plated hour markers and hands. The hour and minute dial on the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Gravity watch is offset at 2 o’clock, leaving room to show the movement balance and escapement on the dial side of the watch, with a small seconds dial underneath the time dial. The in-house ML230 automatic movement inside the case operates at a sedate 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers 50 hours of power reserve.

Squaring the circle – the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Square Wheel Retrograde watchmaking

As playful watches go, the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Square Wheel Retrograde watch takes some beating. The small seconds display at 9 o’clock on the dial is a veritable mechanical ballet, consisting of a square wheel with specially designed teeth that mesh with a trefoil-shaped wheel at its north-east corner. The eye, which is so used to seeing circular gear trains, is wonderfully deceived by the continuous rotation of two shapes on the dial that we would never associate with circular motion. The retrograde part in the watch name comes in the form of the date display at 5 o’clock on the dial, which carries out its retrograde function in an anti-clockwise direction. The Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Square Wheel Retrograde watch is fitted with the in-house Maurice Lacroix automatic movement ML258 which offers 36 hours of power reserve. It comes in a 43mm stainless steel case with a classic anthracite dial with gold accents and a silver dial with blue hands and counters, as well as a matching leather strap.

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Mysterious Seconds watch

Once again Maurice Lacroix plays with our perceptions in the Masterpiece Mysterious Seconds watch. Watch aficionados will be familiar with the idea of “mysterious” watches, where there appears to be no visible connection on the dial between the watch hands and the movement. But in the case of the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Mysterious Seconds watch, the mystery on the dial is taken a step further. Not only does the second hand float in space in a large aperture in the bottom half of the dial, it also spins magically on its own axis as it rotates. The seconds are therefore no longer read against an outer scale on the dial but instead along the lines of a cross to keep up with the mysterious movement of the floating seconds hand. The Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Mysterious Seconds watch has a case in stainless steel, a leather strap and is powered by the Maurice Lacroix in-house ML215 automatic movement, which operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 50 hours. A special watch with a black PVD steel case is also available with a black leather strap and a black mesh cover on the seconds subdial, making the watch even more mysterious. The Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Mysterious Seconds watches are great value with their sub 10,000 dollar price point.

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Retrograde Calendar watch

Coming in with a price under $5,000, the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Retrograde Calendar watch offers a retrograde date indicator at 10 o’clock coupled with power reserve at 2 o’clock and small seconds at 6. The Masterpiece Retrograde Calendar watch has a stainless steel case with a leather strap and is powered by the Maurice Lacroix in-house ML190 automatic movement, which operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers 52 hours of power reserve. The classic design of the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Retrograde Calendar watch is underscored by the dial, available in blue or silver, with its Roman numerals and retrograde date function.

A case of the skeleton in the masterpiece closet

Maurice Lacroix also uses its Masterpiece watches to showcase its skeleton watches, in both time only and chronograph versions. In the case of the time-only skeleton Masterpiece watches, the movement is an in-house Maurice Lacroix manual ML134 caliber, which offers 45 hours of power reserve. For the Masterpiece skeleton chronographs, the in-house automatic ML206 movement is used, which offers 48 hours of power reserve. The manual Masterpiece skeleton watches come with a case in stainless steel or black PVD stainless steel and a black leather strap. These watches differ by the finish of the movement mainplate made visible by the skeleton construction, which is in blue or black. The Masterpiece skeleton chronograph has a different architecture with a rhodium plating and black gold DLC finish on the movement and a separate dial element for the chronograph, consisting of black gold plated hours and minutes, a blue varnished chronograph hand and black gold plated 30 minute chronograph wheel for the 30 minutes counter.
