Two creative minds, one watch: Bvlgari’s creative force Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani met with independent watchmaker Vianney Halter, and the two hit it off instantly.
They soon agreed on creating an Octo Finissimo, with the unmistaken DNA of Vianney Halter’s Antiqua – a watch introduced in 1998, which deserves the appellation modern icon.
The Octo Finissimo Dual Time × Vianney Halter movement has an additional module with GMT and Date, and the front has been equipped with new apertures for date, GMT and Day and Night. If you turn the watch 45° you have a smiley, albeit a lot more subtle than what we have seen from some other brands. The top left button moves the date disc, whereas the lower button operates the GMT. This makes the setting of these complications extremely user friendly. As you may know, the Octo Finissimo has been the canvas of many creative collaborations with watchmakers, artists, and even architects. But the Octo Finissimo Dual Time × Vianney Halter is the first one that also led to Bvlgari creating a new movement in its manufacture.
Says Vianney Halter about the watch, whose complex 40.5x9.7mm case comprises more than 50 parts: “Adapting to Bvlgari’s essence while integrating my own style and mechanical ideas is a stimulating exercise, especially when the dialogue is fluid and engaging. This experience is the perfect definition of a collaboration!"
Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Bvlgari’s Product Creation Executive Director, is also excited about the collaboration. “The rigorous geometry of the Octo Finissimo case enhances the construction of independent dials, characteristic of Vianney Halter; the ultra-thin movement integrates new functions while preserving the distinctive qualities that have earned its reputation among watch enthusiasts,” he says.
Within the watch beats the maison’s new automatic BVF 200 caliber, with a micro-rotor and 60 hours of power reserve.
The Art of Illusion
Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Dazzle: The Art Of Illusion is the next brand-new Octo iteration. This one is clad in what looks like a QR code, but it is actually a modern type of camouflage. For this kind of pattern, which is often used by, for instance, car manufacturers during secret test drives, and to realize this pattern on a watch, Bvlgari turned to laser engraving — a technique mastered in-house by the maison. This kind of expression makes it impossible to see the exact patterns or shapes, which makes it extremely useful for car manufacturers, in case paparazzi try to capture shots of a secret car prototype on a test drive. This is why the QR-code-like pattern is often referred to as automotive camouflage. Using it on a watch creates a peculiar illusion: some of the watches angles kind of disappear. The design eats itself in a never-before-seen fashion. “Once again, the Octo Finissimo becomes a space of experimentation — and remains so unique that its silhouette alone renders it recognizable,” explains Mr. Buonamassa Stigliani.
Aluminum in Titanium
Last but not least, we have what sounds like a paradox. The Bvlgari Aluminium collection unveils a new identity, with two watches forged in titanium. (with the moniker Titanio). Almost 30 years ago Bvlgari Aluminium shocked the watch world when the Italian brand proved that luxury could be made by pairing an aluminum case and bracelet with rubber on the bezel and on parts of the bracelet. Now, the same principle is applied, but with titanium.
Both the Titanio Chronograph and the Titanio GMT are automatic, and the chronograph measures 41mm, whereas the 24-hour GMT is a bit smaller with its 40mm. Both are adorned with the Bvlgari Bvlgari bezel in black rubber, which has been part of the monochrome design since it was introduced in 1998. Both have extremely flexible bracelets with a couple of large fixed links combined with a velcro part.
Of course, this couple is also powered by inhouse-calibers—The Bvlgari Titanio GMT is equipped with the B192 caliber, whereas the Chrono is powered by the B381 automatic chronograph with a 42-hour power reserve.
