The unique piece that Montblanc has kindly offered for the Only Watch 2017 charity auction comes with a considerable heritage. Presented in 2016, the 1858 chronograph pays tribute to the storied history of Minerva in the production of high-quality chronographs. Since acquiring Minerva, Montblanc has spent a decade trawling through this rich history for inspiration for the next-generation timepieces using the company's superlative chronograph movements.
Last year, the Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Blue Limited Edition of 100 pieces won the chronograph category at the prestigious Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève. The unique piece on offer at Only Watch this year is equipped with the same calibre MB M16.29 hand-wound monopusher chronograph movement with a column wheel, horizontal clutch and the distinctive V-shaped chronograph bridge.
Like all movements that are produced at the Minevera factory in Villeret, it comes with a meticulous finish including bevelled edges, Côtes de Genève and circular graining. A red-gold coloured coating has been applied to the mainplate and bridges to match the colour of the 44mm bronze case. The dial is a unique green that is specific to the Only Watch model and hints at the typical verdigris patina that the bronze case will take on over time. A matching green alligator leather strap completes the unique piece.
Price estimate: CHF 28,000-35,000
