Ode to lightness

Reuge celebrates its renewal by inviting you to awaken your senses, to soaring imagination, harmony and openness with its creation titled “Onkõ”.

A chapter heralding a whole new era at Reuge

Lightness, harmony and openness are omnipresent in the creative work carried out under the impetus of Denis Flageollet, founder and Master Watchmaker of De Bethune, and youthful Artistic Director Clara Martin, who are jointly breathing new life into Reuge.

Lightness of the creative soul in the hands of Reuge's artisans; in the design of the object; in the nobility of the materials; in the harmony of its mechanical operation and sound; in its openness to wonderment, and to what is to come... Onkõ offers an experience that awakens the senses. An ode to lightness that represents the future incarnation of the Reuge universe.

Onkõ, named after Japanese lanterns, a visual and aural metaphor for Reuge's new identity

Onkõ was born of a desire to create a dialogue between metal and wood, to instil harmony between music and automaton mechanisms, so as to reveal a new creative direction.

The technical and aesthetic ambitions of the object have been matched by an exceptional range of skills in fine workmanship exercised at the highest level, whether in instrument making or in art mechanics. The magic of sound and the spellbinding poetry of the automaton movement is a soothing meditative experience that generates a unique sense of wonder and highlights exceptional craftsmanship combined with the technical excellence of sound mechanics.

Derived from the contraction in Japanese of "on" for sound and "kõ" for light - "音光" (onkou), Onkõ opens and closes to music like a corolla. Like a metaphor.

Inspired by Japanese tõrõ lanterns and their symbolism evoking the five elements of the Universe: earth chi, water sui, fire ka, wind fū and space kū, Onkõ single-handedly embodies the five fundamental elements, while representing the audible metaphor and personification of the new Reuge brand identity.

Like a gentle whisper revealed beneath its slender blond wooden slats, the gentle curves of its shape soften the rigorous discipline of its mechanics; the poetry of Onkõ speaks of Japanese minimalism that is a life philosophy inviting one to sobriety as well as an art of surrounding oneself with well-being, softness and lightness.

Let the useful be beautiful and let the beautiful never be useless. Captivating, enchanting and magical, Onkõ brings to light not only its Sound, but also its Light.

The Reuge team, headed by Denis Flageollet, thus continue to ensure both enchantment and delight by demonstrating a totally free-spirited vision of their craft: first with the birds gracing the Liberté artwork revealed last spring; and now, at the end of summer, with a new and resolutely contemporary take on the future of the music box. Join us in celebrating this new era of creativity and wonder.
