The manufacture supported a Saxon encounter programme for Japanese youths from the Fukushima region.
Following the devastating tsunami catastrophe of March 2011 in Fukushima, the Free State of Saxony's Prime Minister, Stanislaw Tillich, invited Japanese children from the affected areas to a journey to Saxony for a period of rest and recovery. Pupils and teachers from the Oshika Middle School in the Province of Miyagi accepted this invitation and stayed for ten days in a Saxon youth hostel together with German children.
A series of trips introduced the children to Saxony and its sights and gave them an opportunity to share their very personal impressions of the catastrophe with young people from Germany. The latter learned how the Japanese schoolchildren are getting along two years after the disaster, what they are doing to come to terms with their experience and what has changed for them since the incident.
As a company with friendly relations with Japan for many years now, it was very important for Glashütte Original to make it possible for the Japanese schoolchildren to enjoy a period of rest and recuperation in Saxony, and to support the Government of Saxony's project together with other partners. As a result, Glashütte Original Managing Director Günter Wiegand was pleased to participate in the encounter programme's closing event on August 20, 2013 in the Saxon State Ministry of Finance. Along with the Japanese ambassador Takeshi Nakane and other guests, Mr Wiegand attended a dance performance by the children and a moving presentation of their experience and impressions of the catastrophe. With their performance the children thanked their hosts for the invitation to the Free State of Saxony and for the warm reception they received.
