If there’s one thing we can count on in uncertain times…

“As regular as clockwork,” they say, when something is reliable and can be counted on with full confidence. The next level above this is when you say something is “as regular as a Swiss watch” — a phrase that I take particular delight in, for obvious reasons. When living in uncertain times, the comfort and pleasure derived from something absolutely reliable is amplified. And it’s with this mindset that we welcome, for the third consecutive year despite all odds, LVMH Watch Week.

The optimism and exuberance of this year’s new releases from the LVMH watch brands — Bulgari, Hublot, TAG Heuer and Zenith — is exactly the thing we need right now. That’s just my opinion, of course, but I’m sure there are many of you out there who agree.

If you’ve recently been thinking wistfully about the good old days (I certainly have been), then the pre-salon release of Zenith is going to make your heart beat just a little faster. The new Zenith Defy Revival A3642 is a thing of beauty; although I have to confess that I’m far from objective in my assessment. The original model from 1969, of which the Revival A3642 is a faithful homage, has been lodged in a special spot in my brain for a few years now. I’ve been prodding various key people at the Le Locle watch company for quite some time to bring it back, and I’m not saying they released it because of me (just to make me shut up about it), but it’s a win-win situation. Everyone’s happy about the Defy Revival A3642. This watch actually makes me embarrassed, because I am a fully grown adult and ought not to have crushes on inanimate objects. (But I do. Those hour markers! I would fill this page with heart emojis if I could.)
