Press release
On Thursday 11 October 2012, the special exhibition „When Split Seconds Decide“, which highlights the development of timekeeping in sports, was opened in the German Watch Museum Glashütte.
Omega – Glashütte Original's Swiss sister brand – brought a number of exhibits from the Omega Museum in Biel documenting a period of over 80 years; for the very first time they will be on display in Glashütte at the German Watch Museum.
Historic and contemporary measurement devices provide evidence of the rapid development of time measurement technology from its beginnings to today's complex installations.
Attractive and original exhibits such as stopwatches from the Los Angeles 1932 Olympic Games or the stadium bell from London 2012 demonstrate the time measurement aspect of sporting competitions.
Also on show at the exhibition are unusual and occasionally tragic decisions such as speed skater Anni Friesinger's fall just short of the finish line in Vancouver 2010.
The opening offered a special incentive for top athletes and coaches to accept the invitation to the German Watch Museum Glashütte. On hand for the occasion, along with experts and friends of fine mechanical watches, were skeleton world champion Diana Sartor, two-time Olympic silver medal winner Mark Huster (weightlifting), bobsleigh European champion Matthias Benesch, Olympic bobsleigh coach Gerd Leopold and the General Secretary of the State of Saxony Sports Federation, Ulf Tippelt.
This special exhibition in the German Watch Museum Glashütte remains open until January 13, 2013.
