To mark its 270th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin has unveiled some spectacular timepieces. Introduced this spring, Solaria reached for the stars, setting the record as the most complicated wristwatch with its 41 complications. Now, the Overseas Grande Complication Openface also claims its place among the great complications—a playing field reserved for the most prestigious watchmakers. For the first time, an Overseas model is equipped with the calibre 2755P featuring a perpetual calendar, tourbillon, and minute repeater. To ensure nothing is lost from this high-flying mechanical show, a sapphire dial reveals the movement’s inner workings—also visible through the caseback. It’s a double surprise in this sporty collection, with its dynamic lines and grade 5 titanium case. A material that is not only light due to its low density but also extraordinarily resistant, capable of withstanding the demands of daily life.
1. Classic and sporty: it unites yin and yang
The new Overseas Grande Complication Openface combines the tradition of watchmaking complications with the sporty adrenaline of its design and titanium construction. Its lightweight and robust titanium case complements the refined sound of the minute repeater, the graceful motion of the tourbillon, and the ingenuity of the perpetual calendar’s “mechanical memory”—able to account for calendar variations until March 1, 2100 (an exceptionally non-leap year). From case to integrated bracelet, titanium gives the piece a subtle metallic glow—darker and deeper than steel. With its polished and satin-brushed surfaces, the watch fits squarely within traditional watchmaking—albeit with a contemporary flair.
2. It reveals (almost) everything about its high-end mechanics
The Overseas Grande Complication Openface displays its calibre (composed of 602 components!) through a sapphire dial—a window into the watch’s mechanical soul. Technically demanding, the transparent plate is carefully machined to create openings over the gear trains for the hours, minutes, day, date, month, and small seconds on the tourbillon. All finishing is completed to the high standards of fine watchmaking, with metallized material used for the display indicators. On the reverse, the open caseback also reveals components of the movement, including the fully polished minute repeater hammers—capable of chiming the hours, quarters, and minutes. Christian Selmoni, Director of Style and Heritage, notes that “Calibre 2755 benefited from the research that led to the creation of Tour de l’Île, the 250th anniversary piece featuring 16 complications.” He also highlights the calibre’s exceptionally thin profile for such a complex movement—just 7.9 mm.
3. It brings the Geneva Seal into a contemporary world
Visible at 4 o’clock, the Geneva Seal embodies watchmaking excellence, here paired with the thoroughly modern spirit of the timepiece. Vacheron Constantin blends tradition and innovation, integrating high-tech materials like sapphire and titanium without ever compromising the requirements of this prestigious certification. A challenge the brand has already mastered, notably with the recent Traditionnelle Openface models launched this spring. Titanium, introduced by the brand in 2008—initially for the bezel of the Quai de l’Ile—has become essential to the Overseas collection, enhancing its sporty and contemporary character. Despite the experience gained over the years, each new certified model still requires detailed plans and samples to be submitted to the Timelab foundation, which oversees the Geneva Seal.
