DEFY Extreme Ultraviolet: High frequency in an different spectrum

The DEFY Extreme Ultraviolet takes its name from one of the most intense regions of the light spectrum, a fitting reference for a watch pushing mechanical precision far beyond conventional limits, with a 5 Hz frequency for timekeeping and an astonishing 50 Hz frequency dedicated to its chronograph function.

Far more than an aesthetic choice, ultraviolet symbolizes heightened performance, energy and intensity, reflecting ZENITH’s relentless pursuit of high-frequency precision.

The DEFY Extreme Ultraviolet revisits a distinctive colour and material language first explored by the Manufacture with the DEFY 21 Ultraviolet in 2020. That striking interpretation of contemporary horology introduced a violet-toned movement housed within a matte sandblasted titanium case. The DEFY Extreme Ultraviolet now reinterprets this visual identity through the sharper and more architectural silhouette of the DEFY Extreme.

Its angular 45mm case is crafted entirely from matte microblasted titanium, creating a dark, almost reflectionless appearance that reinforces the graphic geometry of the watch. This muted finish accentuates the DEFY Extreme’s sculptural character while shifting the focus toward the purity of its lines and construction. Titanium also proves particularly suited to a watch of this scale, offering an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio that keeps the case remarkably light and comfortable on the wrist. Naturally hypoallergenic and highly resistant, it reinforces the DEFY Extreme’s uncompromising approach to performance and wearability.

The DEFY Extreme Ultraviolet combines violet-tinted sapphire elements with matching violet subdials arranged in a layered geometric construction that creates both visual depth and a strong sense of technical precision. Transparency becomes an integral part of the design language, revealing the movement’s architecture beneath. The display features central hours and minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock and a 60-second counter at 6 o’clock. Completing the composition, the central chronograph hand performs one full rotation every second, ensuring exceptional readability while enabling precise measurement to 1/100th of a second. The chronograph power reserve indication is positioned at 12 o’clock.

This technical achievement is made possible by the dual-escapement architecture of the El Primero 9004 calibre. The movement incorporates two independent escapements, each operating at its own dedicated high frequency. The first beats at 5 Hz (36,000 VpH) for standard timekeeping, while the second operates at an extraordinary 50 Hz (360,000 VpH) exclusively for the chronograph. This second escapement drives the chronograph hand through one full rotation every second, making 1/100th-of-a-second measurements fully visible and immediately readable. On the reverse side, ZENITH’s signature star-shaped oscillating weight is rendered in violet, extending the colour concept throughout the movement.

True to its versatile spirit, the DEFY Extreme Ultraviolet is delivered on a violet rubber strap with folding clasp and comes with two additional options: a microblasted titanium bracelet and a black high-performance Velcro strap. Thanks to the DEFY Extreme’s intuitive interchangeable strap system, each can be swapped effortlessly, allowing the watch to move easily between technical use and everyday wear.

The DEFY Extreme Ultraviolet is available now at ZENITH boutiques, online, and through authorized retailers worldwide.
