Inspired by the fleeting brilliance of sunlight dancing on the spray of a Black Forest waterfall, the Maison imagined a pioneering concept: diamonds set free. Neither set nor static, but alive. With Happy Diamonds, light, movement and emotion became inseparable, giving rise to a new aesthetic in both watchmaking and jewellery. More than an innovation, it was a shift in perception — one that would come to define one of Chopard’s most enduring creative signatures. As Caroline Scheufele, Co-President and Artistic Director, recalls: “I grew up with this idea, first expressed by my mother, that diamonds are happier when they are free. This deeply poetic vision has never left me.”
Today, the Maison returns to this founding vision with Happy Diamonds Heritage — a collection that revisits its origins through a contemporary lens, where memory and modernity meet with instinctive elegance.
Watches: a legacy in motion
At the heart of this new chapter are two watch re-editions, directly inspired by the earliest Happy Diamonds models, which Chopard brings back for the first time. From the very beginning, these original creations were imagined in two sizes – a duality faithfully revisited today. Their cushion-shaped cases reinterpret the bold geometries of the 1970s, striking a subtle balance between circle and square. This singular form, at once structured and softened by rounded edges, creates a fluid harmony, enhancing the perception of movement while sitting elegantly on the wrist.
As in the original watches, this dynamic is heightened by the black onyx dials, whose deep, velvety surface absorbs light to better reveal it. Polished to a mirror-like finish, onyx introduces a striking contrast, transforming each Happy Diamond into a point of pure brilliance, as if suspended in an infinite, almost ethereal space. The result is both graphic and mesmerising, amplifying the choreography of the stones with every gesture. Between two sapphire crystals, the diamonds glide freely around the dial — a perpetual ballet of light that captures the wonder of the original creation, awarded the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden in 1976 – then regarded as the highest distinction for innovation and excellence in jewellery and watchmaking.
The 34 mm model, crafted in 18-carat ethical yellow gold and featuring 21 Happy Diamonds, is powered by the Chopard 10.01‑C hand-wound Manufacture movement, visible through an open caseback. Displaying the hours and minutes and offering a 45-hour power reserve, this in-house calibre — introduced in 2024 — measures just 15.70 mm in diameter and 2.90 mm in thickness, making it one of the smallest and thinnest mechanical movements in the world.
Its 24 mm counterpart, more intimate in scale, carries 9 diamonds and a quartz movement, expressing the same luminous spirit in more delicate proportions. True to their origins, these creations embody an elegance that transcends categories as naturally today as it did nearly five decades ago.
Jewellery: distilling the signature
Extending beyond the watch, Happy Diamonds reveals its essence in a suite of jewellery pieces — a signet ring, cufflinks, tie pin (also worn as a brooch) and pendant — each one reinterpreting the original design in its most graphic and essential form. Set in 18-carat ethical yellow gold, the creations juxtapose the deep, velvety opacity of black onyx with the kinetic brilliance of happy diamonds, enclosed within sapphire crystals. Reduced yet expressive, these pieces feel like modern talismans — intimate objects that carry both heritage and movement within them.
The clown: when movement became emotion
If Happy Diamonds captures the wonder of movement, the Happy Clown embodies its emotion. Born in 1985 from a sketch by a young Caroline Scheufele, inspired by the enchantment of the circus, it was brought to life in secret by Karl Scheufele, who had the piece created as a surprise for his daughter. What began as a personal gesture would soon become a defining milestone in the Maison’s history.
As Caroline Scheufele says: “The Happy Clown was born from my imagination, as a spontaneous drawing filled with joy and fantasy. I never expected it to become a piece of jewellery. My father had it created in secret as a surprise, and it marked the beginning of Chopard’s journey into jewellery. It carries a sense of emotion and freedom that continues to inspire us today.”
Today, it returns in two new interpretations that remain faithful to its original spirit while embracing a refined modernity. In 18-carat ethical yellow gold, its rounded silhouette is animated by a constellation of freely moving gemstones — diamonds, ruby, sapphire, emerald — their colours flickering with every movement. A pavé-set version in 18-carat ethical yellow gold, radiant with five Happy Diamonds, offers a more luminous expression of the same playful energy. With its articulated head, legs and arms, expressive details and unmistakable presence, the Happy Clown becomes more than a motif — it becomes a companion. A reminder that diamonds, when set free, do more than shine. They surprise and delight.
Craftsmanship: a mastery of form and light
From the initial stamping of the metal, shaping the geometry of the case and jewellery pieces, to the meticulous hand polishing that reveals a soft, luminous finish enhancing every curve and contour, each stage reflects Chopard’s exceptional craftsmanship. Every component is assembled and refined by hand, while the setting of the Happy Diamonds, placed between two sapphire crystals within a proprietary gold capsule, requires exceptional precision to guarantee their total freedom of movement. This delicate balance — ensuring the diamonds move effortlessly yet remain perfectly guided — lies at the heart of Chopard’s savoir-faire, bringing each creation to life through motion.
