More than three decades after its creation by Caroline Scheufele, Chopard Co-President and Artistic Director, Happy Sport remains an emblem of effortless elegance. Introducing the groundbreaking combination of steel and diamonds for the first time, the watch was designed by a woman, for women, and made a profound mark on its era. Today, it continues to embody a spirit that is at once free, spontaneous, and resolutely modern.
As Caroline Scheufele explains: “When I created the Happy Sport in 1993, it was a bold gesture, almost provocative. Combining steel and diamonds went against all conventions. But I wanted a watch that could accompany me at every moment of the day: sporty, feminine and joyful, one that could be worn just as easily with jeans as with a cocktail dress. I am very excited to bring this original design back today, in the form of a creation that is subtle, fresh and contemporary.”
There are moments in the history of design that shift everything — quiet evolutions that redefine the language of elegance. In 1976, inspired by sunlight shimmering across the spray of cascading waters of a Black Forest waterfall, Chopard freed diamonds from their traditional settings for the first time, allowing them to dance freely at the heart of Happy Diamonds watches. In 1993, the Manufacture pushed this audacious vision further. With the creation of Happy Sport, diamonds were no longer orbiting the dial, they glide and twirl above it, becoming part of the very movement of time.
Today, Chopard returns to this founding gesture with Happy Sport The First: a collection that revisits the spirit of the original watch through an intuitive modernity defined by comfort and elegant simplicity. Back by popular demand, the iconic model is reborn in two diameters of 26 mm and 33 mm, refined yet effortlessly wearable. These new interpretations speak to women who seek not only beauty, but above all movement – watches that accompany her rhythm rather than restricting it. Soft proportions, fluid lines, and a sensual second-skin feel define the silhouette, while the signature happy diamonds continue to shimmer with irrepressible joy.
At the heart of this revival lies one of the collection’s most distinctive elements: the pebble-link bracelet. Originally imagined by Caroline Scheufele, its design draws inspiration from pebbles shaped by the sea – natural forms fashioned over time, polished by the movement of the waves. Their rounded, organic silhouettes translate into supple, harmonious links. Entirely redesigned and crafted in-house, the bracelet drapes fluidly around the wrist. Scaled to each case size, it enhances the feeling of balance and intimacy.
The dial, in its quiet refinement, reveals an interplay of textures and tones: silver-toned and finely grained, punctuated by midnight blue Roman numerals and a precise railway minute track. Blued, sword-shaped handsglide across the surface, ensuring optimal legibility with a touch of vintage charm. Then come the happy diamonds — five on the 26 mm, seven on the 33 mm. Freely suspended between two sapphire crystals with double anti-reflective treatment, they resist stillness, turning each gesture into a play of light.
From the stamping of the metal, which defines the geometry of the case and bracelet, to the meticulous hand-polishing that reveals a soft, luminous finish enhancing every curve and contour, each stage of crafting the Happy Sport reflects Chopard’s craftsmanship. Every component is assembled and refined by hand, while the setting of the Happy Diamonds – each of them housed within a proprietary gold capsule placed between two sapphire crystals – requires exceptional precision to ensure their freedom of movement. This balance between technique and motion lies at the heart of Chopard’s savoir-faire, bringing each diamond to life.
Faithful to its origins yet looking to the future, the collection is crafted in Lucent Steel™ (Chopard’s exclusive steel, made with a recycling rate of 80%), as well as in two-tone Lucent Steel™ and ethical yellow gold, or entirely in ethical yellow gold — a reflection of the Maison’s commitment to its Journey to Sustainable Luxury.
In revisiting its heritage, Chopard does not simply reissue an icon. It reaffirms a belief: that true luxury moves with you. This vision is brought vividly to life through the Maison’s latest campaign, where global ambassadors Bella Hadid and Liu Wen embody the spirit of freedom and motion, their presence echoing the effortless glide of the happy diamonds and placing movement at the very heart of this new chapter.
