“All grown-ups were once children… (but only a few remember it).” These words close the dedication to Léon Werth at the beginning of what would become the most translated book in the world. Available in over 650 languages and dialects, The Little Prince won readers over as soon as it was published on April 6, 1943, in New York, while its author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, had just joined the French forces in Algeria.
Written during World War II, while the aviator-author was in exile in London in 1942, this poetic and philosophical tale has captivated generations across the globe with its humanist message. Decades later, its universal values continue to resonate, even inspiring a collaboration with IWC. “In the history of luxury, this is a unique example of a long-standing partnership. It all started with a meeting with Georges Kern, then CEO of IWC, on a plane. At first, the collaboration focused on Saint-Exupéry, and later on The Little Prince,” explains Olivier d’Agay.
The great-nephew of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry still recalls the early days of this journey, which began in 2006, as well as its immediate outcomes. “The creation of the Foundation in 2009 allowed us to bring together our various initiatives. The idea was also for IWC to be involved. We then launched communication efforts around Saint-Exupéry’s legacy. Our first action was to have the pieces recovered from his aircraft in the Mediterranean, such as his famous bracelet, entered into the Air and Space Museum in Le Bourget. For IWC, this was an opportunity to revive the Pilot’s collection. It also enabled them to engage in social and environmental initiatives, while we benefited from the brand’s strong communication power.”
At first, limited editions were released, followed by watches integrated into the permanent collection. At the same time, auctions helped highlight specific projects and support fundraising initiatives. Projects multiplied both in France and abroad. “Thanks to this partnership, we were able to inaugurate the largest children’s hospital, Pequeno Príncipe in Curitiba, Brazil; open schools in Morocco and Mali; set up libraries; fund a mobile library in Cambodia to distribute books; and more recently, establish a professional integration fund in Honduras for homeless youth.”
All the models feature the signature midnight blue dial of the Little Prince editions, paired with cases crafted in steel, gold, or ceramic. Through this, the future of the Foundation is also taking shape. “The next project that is particularly important to us is the creation of a major Saint-Exupéry museum in France, in his childhood home near Lyon, with the Foundation located alongside it. This project requires a budget of 45 million euros and an international scope. We are seeking patron support, and IWC naturally has a role to play in accompanying us.”
