Building on the connection between legacy and present, the 90s case design quickly rose to iconic status upon its introduction to the civilian public, offering an unprecedented aesthetic that boldly challenged traditional watchmaking norms. Upon its unveiling, the historic 47mm proportions were refined into a more compact 44 mm, while the monobloc construction case embraced a more streamlined geometry. Distinguishing itself from the cushion-shaped references of the 1960s, the 1990s Luminor was characterized by its sharp, angular case lines, robust solid lugs, crisper edges, and a signature curved crown protective bridge seamlessly integrated into the watch’s profile.

The three new Luminor references build on those same design principles: their case preserves the commanding presence of the 1990s Luminor, while the proportions have been thoughtfully adapted to a more versatile 42mm, ensuring greater wearability for a wider range of wrist sizes. The lines are direct, the edges are reduced to their most essential expression, and the crown protective bridge follows the curve of the case rather than appearing as a separate element. The result is a contemporary 42 mm interpretation: iconic in its architecture, functional in spirit, and shaped for everyday wear.
While the design alludes to the 90s, the movement and upgraded water resistance bring it firmly into the present. Powering the new references is the P.980 calibre, a 3-day power- reserve automatic movement perfectly matching Panerai’s aesthetic codes and featuring a traversing balance wheel bridge that enhances stability and performance accuracy. The movement incorporates a stop-second function, allowing for precise synchronization by halting the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out. This functionality directly harks back to Panerai’s military heritage and the critical requirement for precise time synchronization, a capability highly valued in demanding professional diving environments, such as the Navy.
Additionally, P.980 has undergone a six-position testing to ensure reliable chronometric performance, and it operates at a frequency designed to maintain consistent, accurate timekeeping over extended use. From an aesthetic point of view, the calibre’s top plates present horizontal brushed finishing, while the open-worked oscillating weight features a blue “Officine Panerai” engraving, and chamfers with horizontal brushed and diamond finishing.
The 50 BAR (~500 meters) water resistance affirms Luminor’s position as a robust tool watch, suited for professional divers and enthusiasts alike, reflecting once again Panerai’s legacy of creating reliable, high-performance tool watches. This performance is rigorously validated at Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where each watch undergoes advanced water-pressure testing that exceeds its guaranteed rating by 25% in machines that combine air and water tests, enabling precise measurement and sealing integrity under load.
The essential case is paired with a printed Super-LumiNova® dial, highlighting one of Panerai’s defining functional codes: visibility and luminosity in low-light conditions. These new timepieces are distinguished by a dial consisting of a single plate on which all graphic indices are printed in different colors and successive stages. The Super-LumiNova® is then applied over the graphics, creating a slightly raised effect providing excellent legibility in the dark, with a subtly convex finish that gives the numerals a three-dimensional appearance. This design choice serves as a subtle homage to the monolayer construction found in the first models introduced to the civilian public. Additionally, the dial preserves the functional balance of Panerai’s historical visual codes, featuring no date and a small seconds counter positioned at 9 o’clock. This distinctive element, characterizing many Panerai watches, was born to meet the specific requirement of frogmen to immediately confirm the watch’s operation.
The new Luminor PAM01710 sets the tone with a steel case, black matte dial and hands, ivory Super-LumiNova®, and a beige canvas strap, while the new Luminor PAM01711 shares the same steel case while introducing a matte green dial and green canvas strap. The new Luminor PAM01714 completes the trio with a steel DLC case, matte blue dial, and blue canvas strap. Its darker case takes on a stronger presence, sharpening the lines of its 90s-inspired architecture, while introducing a coating selected for both its technical properties and visual impact.
Composed mainly of carbon, DLC — diamond-like carbon — is known for its high hardness and properties that provide resistance to wear, abrasion, and corrosion. Applied to the steel case via a Plasma-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition process, the coating provides the watch with a more durable surface while creating a deep black finish.
The new canvas straps have been developed specifically for these novelties. Light, strong, and resistant, they give the watches a sporty classic character while remaining faithful to Panerai’s utilitarian spirit. Each strap is finished with leather reinforcement around the holes, and the watches are also compatible with Panerai straps featuring a 22/20 taper, including alligator, calf, rubber, textile, and bi-material options available with the PAM Click Release System™.
