Marco Borraccino is no stranger to blending high-level design with innovative engineering. As co-founder, CEO and Creative Director of Singer Reimagined, the Italian has taken the watch world by storm, fusing a passion for classic automotive design with cutting-edge horology.
With roots in industrial design and a past as the Head of Design for Panerai, Marco’s creative journey eventually led him to team up with Rob Dickinson of Singer Vehicle Design to bring innovative, prize-winning chronograph timepieces to life through Singer Reimagined.
Beyond watchmaking, Marco’s creativity knows no bounds. Whether it’s immersing himself in the raw energy of heavy metal, designing bespoke sneakers or pursuing a surprising new agricultural venture, his interests reveal a man who embraces both creativity and passion in every aspect of life.
In this edition of “Downtime”, we step away from the drawing desk and watchmaking atelier to uncover the personal side of this visionary designer.
Ciao Marco. So, tell us: What is your favourite book?
I can’t resist re-reading ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho at least every other year. It’s an introspective, comforting and inspiring book.
Your favourite movie?
‘Pulp Fiction’, without a doubt. It’s exciting, its structure is unconventional and it’s full of irony – a true milestone in the movie industry.
Your favourite album?
Iron Maiden’s ‘Live After Death’. Every time I listen to it, I’m transported back to my teenage years. I love the energy and the sound of this band.
Your favourite food?
You’ll never guess… Italian, of course!"
Your favourite drink?
After travelling to Mexico several times, I developed a real “passion” for mezcal. Its smoky taste and artisanal production make it not only a great-tasting drink but also a perfect conversation starter.
Your favourite holiday destination?
I have a soft spot for a little hidden gem called Pantelleria. It’s the southernmost Italian island, facing Tunisia. Off the beaten tourist path, with no sandy beaches (which makes it less tourist-friendly), it’s home to real local people and breathtaking sunsets. Plus, it has an incredibly refined food and wine culture. I call it paradise, though it’s definitely not for everyone.
Your favourite TV show?
I'm not much into TV, but I recently enjoyed ‘Decameron’, a black comedy about the plague in Florence during the Middle Ages. Sounds strange, doesn’t it?
Your favourite piece of clothing or sartorial accessory?
I’m really into shoes. A few years ago, I discovered a Portuguese brand that makes bespoke sneakers, and since then, I’ve loved designing my own models. They’re understated and minimalistic, but beautifully crafted.
Your favourite activity that you do in your free time?
Most of my spare time is dedicated to my little one. I became a dad quite late, and I love spending time with my little monster. When I’m not with them, I try to stay in shape and enjoy taking care of and driving my vintage cars.
Tell us something about you that might surprise us.
I’m planning to try harvesting avocado trees in Italy!
What’s one item (not a watch) that you can’t live without? Or that you can’t go anywhere without?
My sunglasses.
What is on your ‘bucket list’ (an activity, accomplishment or destination that you hope to do or visit before you exit this world)?
A sabbatical!
Who is someone who has inspired you in your life and/or career. How did they inspire you?
I'm really inspired by people who work hard to achieve their goals. I’m fascinated by those who never give up and refuse to complain.
Name a famous person or historical figure, dead or alive, that you would like to have lunch with. Why?
Achille Castiglioni, the Italian architect and designer. His vision, and the simplicity and ingenuity of his creations, are a daily source of inspiration for me.
What was the first watch you remember owning? What was special about it?
It was a small, hand-wound, three-hand watch on a blue and black NATO strap – the colours of Inter Milan. I received it when I was 6, during a hospital stay after an accident. Unfortunately, I don’t have it anymore.
And finally, a wrist check: What watch are you currently wearing? And what do you like about it?
I’m wearing a Singer Divetrack. Aside from being the latest watch produced by Singer, showcasing the adaptability of our chronograph movement, it embodies my full creative vision. It blends a design-centric approach with state-of-the-art engineering and improves on something that has remained unchanged for decades.
