Presented at the Louvre to mark Vacheron Constantin’s 270th anniversary, The Quest for Time is a monumental automaton clock embodying the manufacture’s pursuit of excellence since 1755. The result of seven years of development, it comprises 6,293 components, 23 complications, and 144 automaton movements — an extraordinary display of technical mastery. The work unfolds in three sections: a celestial dome depicting Geneva’s sky on September 17, 1755; a three-dimensional retrograde Moon; and the Humanist Astronomer automaton equipped with a groundbreaking mechanical memory, accompanied by an original melody composed by Woodkid. The central section houses an astronomical clock with retrograde indications, a perpetual calendar, sunrise and sunset times, an oversized tourbillon, and a celestial vault engraved in mineral glass. The base, adorned with mother-of-pearl and ornamental stone marquetry, contains the manual-winding Caliber 2370. Created through the collaboration of artisans, watchmakers, engineers, and artists, this masterpiece stands as a poetic and technical manifesto.
