In architecture, renovating a historic monument is never taken lightly: it is essential to respect the design and spirit of the original work, while giving it the contemporary aesthetic appeal expected by users.

In watchmaking, the Villeret collection represents a historic milestone: its origins date back to the quartz crisis, a period during which Blancpain chose to row against the tide. It is being revisited this fall as we prepare to enter the second quarter of the 21st century.

In 1983, Blancpain distinguished itself by significantly contributing to the redeployment of Haute Horlogerie with its Caliber 6395: the smallest full calendar movement with moon phases of its time. It was a passionate statement of mechanical expertise at a time when the watch industry was struggling to emerge from the greatest crisis in its history.

The heart was there, but needed a body. The latter would be refined and elegant, in a word classic, asserting itself from the outset as a tribute to the heritage of an entire country. Blancpain President & CEO Marc A. Hayek speaks of it with great respect: "This timepiece was more than a tribute to watchmaking tradition; it broke new ground in design and revived interest in mechanical watches."

For a model that acquired museum-worthy stature recognized across the industry, redesigning the collection four decades later required a great deal of attention, meticulous care and caution. Every evolution of the Villeret calls for great restraint. It is never a question of breaking with its codes, but of further enhancing them in such a way that this collection remains a benchmark of distinction and timelessness.

The subtlety of confidence

While the Manufacture movements of the new Villeret models retain the performance of the latest generation, their oscillating weight has been modified, much to the delight of discerning observers.

With its extremely sculptural design featuring chamfered edges and an openworked center, it comes in 18K yellow or red gold versions matching the famous double-stepped case. For the Quantième Complet Phases de Lune, the latter even features a slightly slimmer profile, as well as reflecting concern for ergonomics expressed through a subtly enlarged crown and redesigned lugs. The patented under-lug correctors remain in place and the straps are now interchangeable. Naturally, the most visible changes relate to the dial and straps.

New colors bring ample choice along with cheerful vibes without detracting from the collection's classic elegance: sunburst golden brown or opaline white dials with golden hues, accompanied by honey, brown, beige or blue leather straps. Taking center stage thanks to a larger opening, the moon phase makes an elegant statement of its own, as The domed, satin-brushed and polished gold applique appears to be levitating on a ceramic disk. Still on the dial, with comfort and modernity in mind, the hands are no longer openworked but made of solid gold and luminescent, while the satin-brushed Roman numerals have polished sides. The XII has been replaced by the JB symbol honoring the brand founder's initials.

Overall, the new Villeret collection comprises 16 references in two sizes, 40mm and 33.2mm, half of which are available with two types of gemsetting (dial or dial + bezel). While the flagship model remains the Quantième Complet Phases de Lune (40mm, stainless steel or 18K red gold), accompanied by the Quantième Phases de Lune (33.2mm, same materials), fans of particularly refined designs may opt for the Villeret Ultraplate (40mm, stainless steel or 18K red gold). All models now come with a five-year warranty. Blancpain has succeeded in satisfying devotees of classicism and Haute Horlogerie by further enhancing this jewel in the crown of its watchmaking heritage.
